Rory Melbinger tops Marshfield foes in CWRA Late Model main!

May 1, 1999; Marshfield, WI: - It was a perfect night for racing, the warm air was finally here. Gary Back of Vesper set fast time in the CWRA Late Model division. Cale Laessig of Marshfield paced the night with fast time in the CWSSA Super Stock division.

Rory Melbinger scored his first CWRA feature win of the 1999 season after a dramatic charge on the opening lap of the feature race. Melbinger then went on to hold off Wayne Breitenfeldt for the win.

In the CWRA Late Model feature, Rory Melbinger started inside the second row and charged to the front taking the lead for the first lap. Baird Reffner held second place for the first three aps befopre Wayne Breitenfeldt took over. Lap five pushed Reffner back another spot when Jeff Weinfurter moved into third. On the tenth lap Mark Eswein entered the top five.

At lap 11 the scorecard listed Melbinger, Breitenfeldt, Reffner; Eswein and Rocky Breezer in the top five spots. Brian Back moved from his 11th place starting spot and annexed fifth on lap 17, but Breezer took fifth back on lap 19. The battle continued and Back challenged Breezer again for the fifth spot taking the position on lap 23. When the checkered flag fell Melbinger won, Breitenfeldt was second, Reffner third, Eswein fourth and Brian Back fifth.

Cary Lyons held the lead for the first two laps of the CWSSA Super Stock feature race. John Bell took over the spot on the third lap. Shawn Stelzer was the next to lead. Stelzer had started tenth but took over the top spot on lap four, with John Bell running second, Cale Laessig third, Mere Weinfurter fourth and Lyons fifth.

Shawn Stelzer (#40) moved from the Pure Stock division to the CWSSA Super Stocks this year and has seen a good deal of success. Tonight he won the feature event on Marshfield's big half-mile paved oval.

Laessig moved into second on lap five, while Judd Brandel entered the top five taking fifth from Lyons. On lap six, Weinfurter advanced a spot taking third from Bell, Bell continued to fall back losing fourth to Brandl on the 13th circuit.

Meanwhile Weinfurter was on the move taking the runner-up spot from Laessig on lap 16. On the final lap Brandl made his move into third. Stelzer won, Weinfurter was second, Brandl was third, Laessig fourth and Bell rounded out the top five.

Glen Bargender won the 1-main Cruiser feature. He was followed by Darrell Paschel, Chad Simone, Doug Becker and Randy Bargender.


Cruiser winners! In the left photo, Glen Bargender (#10) won the single man Cruiser event, while in the right photo the team of John Dupee Jr., and Kevin Dupee took home the 2-man (team) Cruiser feature race.

John Dupee Jr. and Kevin Dupee won the 2-man Cruiser event. Todd Neider and Mike Gwidt were second and the team of Rick Anderson and Tony Bookhart was third at the line.

Next weeks Miller Time Trials start at 6:00 p.m., with racing starting at 7:00 p.m. Divisions racing next week are CWRA Carquest Late Models, CWSSA Carquest Super Stocks, 1-Man Cruisers, Great North Legends and 2-Man Cruisers.
