Mark Mackesy best in CWRA Late Model action at Marshfield!

May 29, 1999; Marshfield, WI: -  It was a warm night for racing here on this Memorial Weekend. Dean LaPointe of Marshfield set fast time in the CWRA Late Model division. Shawn Stelzer paced the CWSSA Super Stocks and Randy Bargender in the 1-Man Cruisers.

52899a.jpg (19804 bytes) Mark Mackesy (#12) got an early lead in the CWRA Late Model feature event.  Mackesy then motored away to score the win on Marshfield's big half-mile paved oval.

In the CWRA Late Model feature John Frazier led the first lap until Mark Mackesy took over. Troy Nelson was right behind him followed by Joe Krzykowski, Rocky Breezer and Keith Witt. By lap three the top five had been taken over by other drivers. Mackesy in the lead, Krzykowski second, Witt, Jeff Weinfurter and Pete Kempf.

Lap four Kempf was in fourth and Jamie Iverson fifth. Iverson took fourth on lap five and Weinfurter moved into fifth. Gary Back passed Weinfurter for fifth on the next lap. Back moved ahead of Iverson on lap nine for fourth. Lap 13 Back took third and then second on lap 15. Tom Reffner grabbed fifth on lap 13.

Reffner made his move on lap 18 to capture fourth. Mackesy won, Back second, Krzykowski third, Reffner fourth and Iverson fifth.

Local driver Cale Laessig (#01) shot into the lead with five laps remaining in the CWSSA Super Stock main event.  He then held off the challenges of Jason Szymkowiak to score the feature win. 52899b.jpg (14720 bytes)

Bernie Fritz Jr. led the first two laps of the CWSSA Super Stock. John Bell took the lead until lap 13 when Cale Laessig passed him. Lap 14 Judd Brandl was running second, Bell third, Jason Szymkowiak fourth and Carl Saylor fifth. Szymkowiak took third on lap 15 and then second on lap 16. Saylor moved up to fourth and Shawn Stelzer made his way through the field into the top five on lap 18. Laessig won, Szymkowiak, Brandl, Saylor and Stelzer.

Rick Bretl of Appleton captured the top spot in a 12 rider duel in the motorcycle feature event. Front row starting Shannon Reimer led the first lap on his 250 Kawasaki but could not hold off the hard charging 600 Rotax of Bretl and relinquished the lead on lap two.

52899c.jpg (14534 bytes) Perhaps the bravest drivers to challenge the Marshfield Speedway half-mile paved oval each season are those who hop aboard there motorcycles to do battle.  Here Rick Bretl of Appleton poses in victory lane with his 600 Rotax after scoring the win in the main event.  The bikes turn speeds around the track approaching those of the CWRA Late Models.

As the laps reeled off more 600 riders passed the hard riding Reimer, who ended up in 4th place behind Bretl, Kasten & Johnson. Local rider Cliff Eckes brought his Cliffs' Cycle Service / SK Service mount home in 5th place.

Darrell Paschel won the 1-Man Cruiser feature. He was followed by Randy Bargender, Chad Simone, Donald Tieman Jr., and Glen Bargender.

Darrell Paschel scored the win in the single man Cruiser feature race.  The division new this season is the entry level stock car class at Marshfield Speedway.  It continues to grow with new cars showing up every week. 52899d.jpg (14889 bytes)

Rodney Feltz and Fran Esser won the 2-Man Cruiser feature event. Jon Dupee Jr. and Kevin Dupee second. Third was captured by John Vayda and Pete Stargardt.

Next week's events start with Time Trials at 6 p.m., racing 7:30. It's sponsored by TV 9, WOFM, WIZD Bucks Night. All admission $2.00. Divisions racing CWRA Late Models, CWSSA Super Stocks, Great North Legends, 1-Man Cruisers and 2-Man Cruisers.

Marshfield Speedway is a half-mile paved oval located three miles west of Marshfield Wisconsin on County Highway H.
