July 22, 2000; Marshfield, WI - The Cenex Mini-Stocks joined us along with our regular classes for the Jake Schoenfuss Memorial night. Gary Back set fast time in the Super Late Models. Cale Laessig setting the pace in the CWSSA Super Stocks, Chris Boykins in the Mini-Stocks and Duwayne Davis in the 1-Man Cruisers.
A field of twenty cars took the green in the Super Late Model feature. Jeff Weinfurter took the early lead from his pole position. Behind him was Ben Pettis, Pete Kempf, Dean LaPointe and Scott Brandt. Mark Mackesy started in seventh spot passed Brandt and Kempf for fourth. The next lap Mackesy passed LaPointe for third and then on lap five he passed Pettis for second. Judd Brandl who started just behind Mackesy was also moving up quickly and was in third on lap five. Brandl then set his sites on Mackesy and passed him on lap eight. Mackesy came back for lap nine and then it was Brandl for lap ten. On lap 11 though Mackesy passed Brandl and Weinfurter for the lead. Brandl and Weinfurter battled back and forth over the next several laps until lap 16 when a spin sent both cars to the pits. Lap 17 Mark Eswein moved into second and Gary Back into third. Scott Field and Rory Melbinger racing back and forth for fourth. Mackesy won, Eswein second, Back third, Melbinger claimed fourth and Field fifth.
Brian Stroik led lap one of the CWSSA Super Stock feature. Lap two it was Scott Hamel, and the next four laps was Shawn Stelzer. Lap seven Keith Bohmsach took the lead. Stelzer was right behind him and Cale Laessig moved up from his 13th place start for third. Laessig got by Stelzer and started working on Bohmsach. Allan Sankey broke into third on lap 16, but the battle wasnt over Stelzer got it back for one more lap. Laessig was ran out of laps though and Bohmsach won, Laessig second, Sankey third, Stelzer fourth and Larry Schultz fifth.
The first two laps of the Cenex Mini-Stock feature were led by Mike Peterson. The fast timer, Chris Boykins, who started last, was in the lead on lap three. Peterson followed in second for one lap and then Mark May was in second the next two laps. Tory Froelich then grabbed second. May ran in third until Missy Pitts passed him for the position. Froelich and Pitts were unable to reel in Boykins. Boykins won, Froelich second, Pitts third, May fourth and Connor fifth.
The 1-Man Cruiser feature was led by Gary Schallock for 11 laps. Chad Scholl followed in second for six laps until Doug Becker caught and passed him. Rob Detwiler was right behind Becker in third. Lap ten Duwayne Davis passed Detwiler for third. Becker passed Schallock on lap 12 and held on for the win. Schallock finished second, Davis third, Glen Bargender fourth and Don Tieman fifth.
The team of Tim and Greg Firkus won the 2-Man Cruiser race. In second were Jeff Gotter and Larry Scholl and taking home third was Larry Brage and Don Nigh. The winners of the Mechanics races are as follows: Super Stock - Randy Laessig, Mini-Stock - Doug Adams, Late Model - Chris Field, 1-Man Cruiser - Keith Bargender, 2-Man Cruiser - Brian Stroik & Scott Hamel. The lucky winner of tonights Wal-Mart bicycle was Chase Voight of Pittsville. Next weeks events are sponsored by Snap-On Tools. Gates open at 5 p.m., qualifying at 6 p.m., and racing at 7:30. Divisions contending are Super Late Models, CWSSA Super Stocks, Great North Legends, 1-Man Cruisers and 2-Man Cruisers.
