Melbinger back in victory lane at Marshfield!

July 29, 2000; Marshfield, WI -   Snap-On Tools night was threatened with a slight sprinkle just before qualifying. When qualifying got under way, Dave Keays set a new track record in the Legends, turning a 21.054. Mark Eswein was the fast qualifier in the CARQUEST Super Late Models. Merle Weinfurter in the CWSSA Super Stocks and DuWayne Davis in the 1-Man Cruiser division.

Wayne Cottrell took the early lead off the pole in the Super Late Model feature. Mike Brahmstedt followed in a close second, Pete Kempf in third. Rory Melbinger had moved into fourth. A caution on lap five took Kempf and Monte Gress out of the race. Melbinger passed Brahmstedt for second on lap seven.

Gary Back quickly moved through the field and passed Brahmstedt for third on lap eight. Melbinger chased down Cottrell and took the lead at the halfway point. Back passed Cottrell the following lap. Jeff Weinfurter and Mark Mackesy passed Brahmstedt for third and fourth respectively. Chris Wimmer worked his way from mid-pack into the top five on lap 21. Wimmer passed Mackesy for fourth on lap 23. Back caught Melbinger, but couldn’t get past him. Melbinger took the checkered, Back second, Weinfurter third, Wimmer fourth, and Mackesy fifth.

The first lap of the CWSSA Super Stock feature was led by Matt Raykowski. Larry Schultz led the next three laps. Point’s leader Cale Laessig then took over. Allan Sankey then moved into second. Schultz and Merle Weinfurter battled back and forth for third. Lapped traffic became a factor on lap 11 and Weinfurter got third from Schultz. Laessig won, Sankey second, Weinfurter third, Schultz fourth, and Brian Stroik fifth.

The Legend feature was led for the first two laps by Tom Schnitzler. Milt Kemp Jr. then took the lead for the next seven laps. Dave Keays followed Kemp for six laps before taking the lead. Jeff Way also passed Kemp on lap ten for second, placing Kemp in third. Kemp got second back for four laps until he was passed by Dean Fisher. Keays won, Fisher second, Kemp third, La Monte fourth, and Way fifth.

Todd Hookstadt led lap one of the 1-Man Cruiser feature. Matt Horn led the next two laps. Mark Virnig led the following five laps. DuWayne Davis who started 12th took the lead and won. Doug Becker who started 14th finished second, Glen Bargender third, Robert Detwiler fourth and Don Tieman Jr. fifth.

The winners of the 2-Man Cruiser event were Paul Hasenhorl and Scott Strigel. Jesse Zopfi and Chris Kramer took second, and Cory Stecynski and Kevin Dupee third.

The lucky winner of tonight’s Wal-Mart bicycle was Kelly Burt of Marshfield.
