#71 Mark Eswein - Winner MARS McLeod USA 100 at Marshfield Speedway

51300d.jpg (17445 bytes) Mark Eswein (#71) is no stranger to victory lane at Marshfield Super Speedway.  Eswein who competes on a semi-regular basis at the track had a great evening.  First he established an all-time track record with a 17.454 second tour of the half-mile paved oval and he later came back to win the 100 lap feature event.

Eswein was one of 20 drivers who broke the track record during qualifying, turning a lap of 17.545 for the half-mile paved oval. A field of 46 drivers from three states attempted to qualify for the main event.

Todd Zick led the opening five rounds before Don Trapp spun in turn four. Former Mid-American Series champion Jeff Storm shot past Zick on lap six to claim the top spot. Eswein began his charge to the front, taking third position on lap 23 and second on lap 24. He then slipped inside Storm on lap 28 to take the lead.

Storm lost power on the backstretch on lap 35 while running in second position to bring out the yellow flag. Only one more caution flag period slowed the action. That came on lap 41 when Jeff Weinfurter blew his engine going into turn one. Eswein had clear sailing until lap 9l when Don Dix attempted to pull into the inside pit area and nearly whipped out the leader. Eswein was able to squeeze past Dix.

Action up front!  Mark Eswein (#71) dives past Eric Fransen (#16) while Jeff Van Oudenhoven (#45) gives chase.   Eswein would go on to take the checkers, while Van Oudenhoven completed a strong run to claim third. 51300e.jpg (12758 bytes)

Terry Baldry, the winner of the series opener at Wisconsin International Raceway last Sunday, was able to move into second position on lap 98 with an outside move around Jeff Van Oudenhoven. Van Oudenhoven, who drove one of the finest races of his career, came home in a tight third. The finish for fourth position was a wild one as Lowell Bennett edged out Ryan Hanson and Rory Melbinger in a three-wide charge to the finish line.

Rod Wheeler, who had to work his way into the feature through the last chance race, charged through the field to finish seventh and Jim Duchow rounded out the top eight.

The next McLeodUSA MARS Series race is Monday, May 29 at Wisconsin International Raceway in a doubleheader with the NASCAR Re/Max Series.

Hometown racer Johnny Bell (#99) had his Lincoln Continental Super Stock hooked up and won the feature event.

Shawn Stelzer drove off with the early lead for the CWSSA Super Stock feature. It looked as though he might be able to pull away from the pack until Gary Wosick caught him and took the lead. Behind Wosick was Cale Laessig only car lengths behind. On lap ten Johnny Bell worked his way in between Wosick and Laessig for second. Lap 11, Bell took the lead, as lapped traffic became a factor.

As the pack was coming out of turn two a caution involving Marc Baldwin and Wosick, sent both to the rear, Baldwin in the pits, as well as Laessig. Merle Weinfurter then moved into second and Stelzer back into third. Lap 16, lapped traffic was again tightening up the field, but Bell held onto the lead. Scott Hamel had moved up from his 14th starting spot into fourth and Wes Coon running fifth. Bell won, Weinfurter second, Stelzer third, Hamel fourth, and Coon fifth.

Doug Becker (#77) continues to have the winning hand in the 1-man Cruiser division.  The class, which began just last season has seen tremendous growth in it's first two seasons. 51300c.jpg (12791 bytes)

The 1-Man Cruiser feature, first time driver Adam Zwaschka led the first four laps until he and Mark Virnig were involved in a caution in turns three and four. On the   re-start, Doug Becker was your new leader, Darrell Paschel in a close second. Matt Raykowski passed Paschel for second on lap seven. On lap ten Don Tieman was racing in fourth and Frank Wilhelm in fifth. On the checkered flag lap Mark Virnig passed Wilhelm for fifth. Becker won, Feltz second, Paschel third, Tieman fourth, and Virnig fifth.

51300a.jpg (13423 bytes) The 2-man variety of the Cruiser division continues to prove popular with race fans.  Jason Blenker and John Kampert Jr. (#01) were the winners of this evenings event.

In the 2-Man Cruiser event, the team of Jason Blenker and John Kampert Jr. won, Tim and Greg Firkus second, and Paul Hasenhorl and Scott Strigel third.
