Eswein best in Marshfield rain make-up event!

May 28, 2000; Marshfield, WI: -  It turned out to be a beautiful Sunday Night at the races sponsored by Sternweis & Sons Concrete, WOFM & WIZD. Point leader Jeff Weinfurter of Wisconsin Rapids won the CARQUEST Super Late Model dash event to hold onto his nine point lead. Merle Weinfurter of Wisconsin Rapids had a three-peat in the CARQUEST Super Stock division by winning the dash, heat & feature. Cale Laessig of Marshfield set the fast time in that division. Randy Bargender of Marshfield held onto the point led by finishing first in his heat race in the 1-Man Cruiser division.

52800f.jpg (22948 bytes) Though not a regular competitor this season Mark Eswein (#71) has proven to be tough to beat whenever he appears on Marshfield's half-mile paved oval.  Eswein a couple week ago scored a big win in the MARS touring series race, has the field covered this evening.

Pete Kempf led the first lap of the CARQUEST Super Late Model feature. He quickly lost it to Mark Mackesy. Judd Brandl was in a close third and moved into second on lap six, and Mark Eswein overtook Kempf for third. The first caution came out on lap ten for Mike Brahmstedt, driving the borrowed car of Tim Jackson, when he spun in turn four. The race re-started, and Eswein stole the lead from Mackesy. With Eswein now in the lead, Mackesy fell into second and Brandl continued to race third. Jeff Weinfurter moved up from his seventh place start into fourth, and that’s how they finished.

52800b.jpg (17302 bytes) Merle Weinfurter (#24) a former champion in the Super Stock division at Marshfield found victory lane three times this evening.  Winning the dash, his heat and the feature event.

Matt Raykowski led the first seven laps of the CARQUEST Super Stock feature. Lap eight the new leader was Wes Coon, and lap nine Merle Weinfurter grabbed second. A spin on lap ten between Raykowski, Johnny Bell and Scott Hamel. Weinfurter led the re-start, Coon second and Cale Laessig moved up to third. Laessig grabbed second from Coon on lap 12 and began to challenge Weinfurter for the lead. Laessig ran out of laps though and Weinfurter won, Laessig second, Coon third, Allan Sankey fourth and Johnny Bell fifth.

In the 1-Man Cruiser feature, Darrell Paschel grabbed the early lead for the first five laps, until Ric Anderson got it. Paschel was then passed for second on lap seven by Don Tieman Jr. Mark Virnig moved up into third, pushing Paschel back another spot to fourth. Last week’s winner Randy Bargender who started 14th moved up into fifth. Anderson won, Tieman second, Virnig third, Paschel fourth and Bargender fifth.

In the spirit of giving...a NASCAR raffle was held Sunday, May 28th to raise money for the World War II Memorial to be built in Washington D.C.  Eighty-seven prizes of hats, t-shirt & pictures that were donated by some great NASCAR drivers were raffled off for the memorial donation.   Jennifer Martin & Jessica Oestreich (grandaughter of the promotor) raised $430.00 for the World War II Memorial 52800a.jpg (11050 bytes)

Steve Kasten was the bravest of the brave winning the Motorcycle feature.

Seventeen two wheeled daredevils put on a spark throwing wheel-smoking show tonight. Shawano’s Lee Johnson won the first heat and Wausau’s Steve Kasten the second heat race to set up a showdown for the main event. With eleven 250 & 500 riders on the front row and 6 600 riders on the back row the 10 lap feature was run flat out start to finish, no cautions or accidents, just good close racing.

Merrill’s Brad Rotheau grabbed the lead on his 250 for the first four laps, as the 600 riders charged through the pack. Johnson led Kasten for those early laps only to have Kasten blast his SK Service 600 Yamaha past on the outside of turn 3 as they encountered slower traffic. From then on Kasten controlled the show, with Johnson trailing but never close enough to try passing. Young Rotheau held on for third over another newcomer Eric Mischler of Beaver Dam. Local riders Cliff Eckes of Marshfield finished 6th, Scott Winkler of Granton 8th and Woody Eckes of Spencer came in 10th. The next cycle race date on July 8th promises to be even a better show with even more riders showing up to compete on this super fast and safe ½ mile blacktop track.
