June 16, 2001; Marshfield, WI: - The action was delayed a short time for Thomas Electric night here at the races, as Mother Nature doused us with a rain shower just before qualifying was scheduled to begin. We waited it out, dried off the track and were able to start racing only 15 minutes late.
No one went home with fast time since we were unable to hold Miller Time Trials, but Jeff Weinfurter won the Coors Light Dash for Cash and his heat race in the Super Late Models. Ben Pettis won the other Super Late Model heat race. In the CWSSA Super Stocks, Cale Laessig went home with the dash win, Matt Raykowski and Andy Simonis, each with a heat win. Rob Detwiler won the 1-Man Cruiser heat race. If you weren't here for the Super Late Model feature, you missed some great action. Ben Pettis led the first three laps. As the field came out of turn four, Mark Mackesy dove to the inside of Pettis and Jay VanDerGeest jumped to the outside of him. Both cleanly passed him as they made it three wide coming out of the corner. Mackesy took the lead, VanDerGeest second, and Jeff Weinfurter third. Weinfurter then passed VanDerGeest on the outside for second. Jim Sauter Jr. and Judd Brandl weaved through the field quickly and both passed VanDerGeest on lap six. Sauter had his sites set on the lead and worked his way in front of Weinfurter for lap 20. Sauter made a couple of runs for the lead, but Mackesy held the position. Judd Brandl took third from Weinfurter as the white flag flew. Mackesy won, Sauter second, Brandl third, Weinfurter fourth and VanDerGeest fifth. Matt Wisz led the first six laps of the CWSSA Super Stock feature. Larry Schultz quickly drove through the field and into the lead on lap seven. Matt Raykowski was right behind also passing Wisz, pushing him back to third. Tim Hintz was racing in fourth and Duwayne Davis fifth. Lap ten, Allan Sankey moved into the fifth spot. Sankey then took fourth from Hintz on lap 14 and third from Wisz on lap 18. They finished accordingly, Schultz, Raykowski, Sankey, Hintz, Wisz. In Motorcycle action, heat winner Cliff Eckes of Marshfield brought the crowd to their feet on the 2nd lap of the 10 lap final when he slid down in turn one, with fortunately minimal injury. He restarted at the back of the pack and worked his way up to 5th at the end. Meanwhile Lee Johnson of Shawano and Eric Mischler of Beaver Dam fought tooth and nail for the lead, while previous winner Steve Kasten ran down the leaders on the last lap and squeaked out the victory by the width of a wheel.
