June 30, 2001; Marshfield, WI: - Another great night for racing here in Marshfield saw Mark Eswein, Cale Laessig and Johnny Bell all set fast time and win the feature in their respective divisions. However, none were able to accomplish a clean sweep. Quick time in the 1-Man Cruisers was set by Josh Elmhorst.
Mark Mackesy jumped out into the lead from his pole-position start for the beginning of the Super Late Model feature. Jay VanDerGeest and Pete Kempf were running second and third. By lap five, Judd Brandl had worked his way to third and Mark Eswein fourth. Both drivers were able to get past VanDerGeest by lap ten. Then Eswein passed Brandl for second. Lap 20, Eswein caught and passed Mackesy for the lead. Six laps later Brandl passed Mackesy on the outside for second. Eswein won, Brandl second, Mackesy third, VanDerGeest fourth and Wayne Mackesy fifth. The first four laps of the CWSSA Super Stock feature were led by Marv Flick. The next four laps were led by Matt Raykowski. Then the following six laps were led by Tim Plowman. Lap 16, Cale Laessig moved into the lead from his twelfth place start. Merle Weinfurter had also worked his way through the field and into second on lap 19. Plowman took back second from Weinfurter for the last five laps. Laessig won, Plowman second, Weinfurter third, Raykowski fourth and Matt Wisz fifth. Eric Nelson led laps one and two of the 4-Cylinder feature. Bob Gereau the next two and then Johnny Bell took the lead for the remainder of the race. Gereau continued in second until Doug Adams passed him on lap eight. Paul Berg then passed him for second on the next lap. Bell won, Berg second, Gereau third, Froelich fourth and Steve Hauser fifth. The 1-Man Cruiser feature was mainly led by Rodney Feltz except for lap 11 which was led by Fran Esser. Feltz won, Esser second, Wayne Meyer third, Josh Elmhorst fourth and Rob Detwiler fifth. The winners of the 2-Man Cruiser race were Mike Dodson and Luke Hall. Second place went to Paul Hasenhorl and Scott Strigel, third was Jon Dupee Jr. and John Brugh. This week Tuesday we will host a MARS Late Model 100 Lap feature. Grandstand gates open at 5 p.m., qualifying at 6 p.m. and racing starts at 7:30 p.m. Divisions racing are Late Models, CWSSA Super Stocks, 4-Cylinders, 1-Man Cruisers and 2-Man Cruisers. Next Saturday's event is Bucks Night (grandstands $3.00 adm.) and The Bill Sherman Memorial. Special; Marshfield, WI: - A-Rookie sensation Todd Kluever of Marshall, WI leads the McLeodUSA MARS Late Model Series point standings heading into the next series event Tuesday night, July 3 at 7 p.m. at the Marshfield Speedway in Marshfield, WI. the event is the Firecracker 100 on the Marshfield half-mile paved oval. Compacts, super stocks and cruisers will accompany the McLeodUSA MARS Series drivers in the big four-division program. Gates open at 4 p.m. Kluever, coming off a fourth place finish at the Milwaukee Mile Saturday, has 820 points. Eric Fransen of West Bend, WI, who finish second at the Milwaukee Mile, is close behind with 814 points. Tony Strupp, also of West Bend, WI, is third with 752 points. A total of 108 different drivers have competed in McLeodUSA MARS Series events so far this year with an average turnout of 42.6 cars per racing. Fransen won a McLeodUSA MARS feature at the Marshfield Speedway during "Spring Shootout 2001". He edged out Terry Baldry in the 100-lap race. Free camping is offered at the Marshfield Speedway for holiday travelers. The track is located on County Trunk H, three miles west of Marshfield. |
