Pettis paces Late Model action
for first career feature victory at Marshfield!!

July 14, 2001; Marshfield, WI: - Another great night for racing here at the half-mile. Jay VanDerGeest was the quick qualifier in the Super Lates for the first time this year. Andy Simonis set fast time in the CWSSA Super Stocks, and Fran Esser in the 1-Man Cruisers.

Jeff Gotter and Larry Scholl (#7) teamed up to claim the 2-Man Cruiser event.

In the Super Late Model feature Jeff Weinfurter took the early lead. On lap 11 Scott Cychosz spun in turns one and two, bringing out the caution. Jay VanDerGeest chose to go to the pits during that caution, as well as the leader, Weinfurter. When the race resumed Mark Mackesy held the lead. Dean LaPointe running second, Ben Pettis third and Wayne Mackesy fourth.

Lap 23, an incident involving Mark Mackesy and LaPointe, brought out the caution and both went to the back of the pack. Pettis then took the lead and held on for the win. Mark Mackesy finished second, LaPointe third, Wayne Mackesy fourth and VanDerGeest fifth.

Duane Robinson led the first two laps of the CWSSA Super Stock feature. Larry Schultz took the lead, but Andy Simonis was driving through the field and took over the lead on lap 13. Simonis held on for the win, Cale Laessig second, Tim Hintz third, Allan Sankey fourth and Schultz fifth.

Thirteen spark throwing, wheel spinning cycles roared around the blacktop oval tonight in the Open pro class. Rick Bretl of Appleton dominated both the heat and final on his Appleton Yamaha Powersports 600 Rotax. High school math teacher Bret Beyer, also of Appleton showed the rest of the field the way home in second place. Local rider, Cliff Eckes Jr. brought his Cliff's Cycle Service Yamaha YZ426 home in third place.  In the sportbike class, Zeb Boge carved the tightest corners to finish first on his JS&S Power Center Suzuki GSXR750.

The 1-Man Cruiser race was led first by Matt Nelles, then Greg Firkus, and finally by Rob Detwiler for the win. Fran Esser second, Travis Zvolena third, Josh Elmhorst fourth and Firkus fifth.

The winners of the 2-Man Cruiser race were Jeff Gotter and Larry Scholl. Mike Dodson and Luke Hall second, and Bob Payne and Steve Bores third.

The winner of the Wal-Mart bicycle was Cheyenne Thompson of Colby.

Next Saturday's events are sponsored by Bumper to Bumper and WYTE 96.7. Grandstand gates open at 5 p.m., qualifying at 6 p.m. and racing starts at 7:30. Divisions racing are Super Late Models, CWSSA Super Stocks, Legends, 1-Man Cruisers and 2-Man Cruisers.
