Eswein pockets $1,000 for Marshfield Late Model victory!

July 21, 2001; Marshfield, WI: - It was very muggy for the Bumper-To-Bumper and WYTE 96.7FM sponsored night here at the races. Due to the sun beating on turn three all day and causing the asphalt to be very hot, several late models looped it in qualifying. Jeff Weinfurter held on to it for fast time in the Super Lates. Allan Sankey was quick timer and the feature winner in the CWSSA Super Stock division. Dean Fisher was best in Legends qualifying and Fran Esser for the third week in a row for the 1-Man Cruisers.

A field of 18 cars took the green for the $1000 to win Super Late Model feature. Mark Mackesy took the lead from his pole position start. Jim Sauter Jr. quickly moved from third into second and began to work on Mackesy for the lead. Lap nine Sauter took the lead from Mackesy. The following lap, a spin involving Mackesy and Gary Back sent both of them from second and third to the back of the pack.

Mark Eswein then moved up to the second place position when the race restarted. Eswein and Sauter battled for the lead, Sauter trying to hold off Eswein, but lap 13 Eswein had the lead. Sauter held on, looking to finish in a strong second, until lap 24 when his motor blew as he raced down the backstretch. John Frazier and Brad Hartman hit the oil and spun off the track, neither were able to finish the race. Eswein continued to lead, while Dean LaPointe moved up to second and Gary Back, making a strong comeback was now in third. Jeff Weinfurter running fourth and Jay VanDerGeest fifth. Weinfurter passed Back for third on the next lap. At the checkered it was Eswein, LaPointe, Weinfurter, Back and VanDerGeest.

Matt Raykowski led the first seven laps of the CWSSA Super Stock feature. Raykowski held off Scott Hamel and Larry Schultz, but was unable to stay ahead of Cale Laessig. Raykowski ran in second for three laps, until Allan Sankey took second. The caution came out on lap 11 for spin in turn two involving Schultz and Shawn Stelzer. Stelzer took the blame and the position at the back, which allowed Schultz to keep his fourth place position. When the race resumed Schultz passed Raykowski for third, and the next lap Simonis passed him for fourth. Simonis and Schultz battled back and forth for the third spot, while Sankey worked on taking the lead from Laessig. Sankey won, Laessig second, Simonis third, Schultz fourth and Raykowski fifth.

Gnatzig fell to second, Josh Schoenick third, Eric Lokemoen fourth and Dean Fisher fifth. Fisher passed Lokemoen for fourth, and then Schoenick and Fisher passed Gnatzig for second and third. Fisher then passed Schoenick for the second spot on lap nine. Fisher began to challenge Weiler for the lead. At the checkered, Fisher made one last attempt for the lead on the outside, but Weiler won it by half a car length. Fisher second, Schoenick third, Gnatzig fourth and Lokemoen fifth.

In the 1-Man Cruiser feature, Cory Rueth led the first lap. The next 11 laps were led by Wayne Meyer. Rueth ran second for two laps, then Travis Zvolena passed him and held onto second for four laps.
