Eswein earns back to back Late Model wins at Marshfield!

July 28, 2001; Marshfield, WI: - It was quite an exciting night here at the Marshfield Super Speedway as we hosted another $1000 to win Super Late Model feature and a marriage proposal. The MATCO Tools, Gold Medal Trailer Sales and Martinovich Trucking Inc. night began with qualifying. Super Late Model point leader, Jeff Weinfurter, set fast time, stealing it away from Dean LaPointe. Allan Sankey was quick timer in the CWSSA Super Stocks for the fourth time this season, also the point leader. The 4-Cylinder point leader, Johnny Bell set fast time, and Fran Esser in the 1-Man Cruiser division, for the fourth time as well, was the best qualifier.

Mike Dodson and Luke Hall (#55) scored a narrow victory in the 2-Man Cruiser event.

Once the dash and heat events were completed, we proceeded to giveaway the Wal-Mart bicycle. At that point Amy Erdmann was called to the bottom of the grandstands, and her boyfriend Adam Norman walked down with roses. Then, on bended knee, with the microphone he asked Amy to marry him. In front of hundreds of people and through her tears, she said yes. This was a first here at the Marshfield Super Speedway and we wish Adam and Amy the best and thank them for involving all of us here in their special moment.

The third $1000 to win Late Model feature this year was won by non-other than Mark Eswein. When the green flag dropped the first time the field only made it to the backstretch before a wild accident brought out the yellow.

As Wayne Mackesy, pole sitter, and Greg Back, outside pole, made their way down the backstretch, they both left the racing surface and drove up the embankment. It seemed as though Back would get the worst of it, being on the outside, but it was Mackesy's car that flipped and cart-wheeled into turn three. Thankfully both drivers are okay, although neither were able to return.

The was started again, John Frazier led that first lap, and then the caution came out again. This time for Bob Kubisiak, his car spun and he hit the front stretch wall, and was also unable to return. Frazier led lap two and then the caution flew one more time. Jay VanDerGeest, racing third, spun in turns three and four.

The rest of the feature went smoothly, as Jeff Weinfurter took the lead from Frazier on lap four. Dean LaPointe had been running third lost a couple of spots in turns three and four. Eswein passed LaPointe and Frazier on lap four to place him second, behind Weinfurter. Chris Weinkauf moved into the third spot by lap seven. Jason Weinkauf passed LaPointe for fifth position on lap 13 and then moved into fourth on lap 14. VanDerGeest, making his comeback was in fifth by lap 14.

The battle was on for the lead as Eswein chased down Weinfurter. Lap 19, Eswein took the lead on the outside. Chris Weinkauf was able to catch and pass Weinfurter for third on lap 25. Claiming his fourth feature here this year Eswein took home the win. Chris Weinkauf second, Weinfurter third, Jason Weinkauf fourth and VanDerGeest fifth.

Scott Hamel led the first 11 laps of the CWSSA Super Stock feature. The only caution during the event was for an incident on the backstretch involving Matt Raykowski and Andy Simonis. Raykowski's car slid to the infield of the backstretch and rolled over. Thankfully he was also unharmed. When the race resumed, Hamel led, Merle Weinfurter second, Larry Schultz third, Duwayne Davis fourth. Weinfurter took the lead from Hamel on lap 12. Lap 13 Schultz passed Hamel for second. Simonis steadily passing cars was up to second on lap 15. Weinfurter won, Simonis second, Schultz third, Davis fourth and Hamel fifth.

The 4-Cylinder feature was marred by four cautions. Two of which, one of the drivers took the blame for the incident allowing the other driver involved to get his spot back. Lee Hoernke led the first lap, Steve Cottrell the next three until Johnny Bell took over for the win. Bell won, Keith Wirtz second, Doug Adams third, Dan Arneson fourth and Randy Nitzsche fifth.

The first half of the 1-Man Cruiser race was led by Glen Bargender. Wayne Meyer led the second half, holding off charges from Travis Zvolena and Rob Detwiler. Fast timer Fran Esser worked his way up to third, but finished fourth. Meyer won, Detwiler second, Bargender third, Esser fourth and Josh Elmhorst fifth.

The winners of a very close 2-Man Cruiser race were Mike Dodson and Luke Hall. Jeff Gotter and Larry Scholl second, and Bob Payne and Steve Bores third.

The winner of the Wal-Mart bicycle was Jordan Huber from Pittsville.
