Vandergeest captures career first Super Late win at Marshfield!

August 4, 2001; Marshfield, WI: - The fans and drivers braved the heat and humidity for CARQUEST night. Top drivers in the Super Late Model division were Mark Eswein in qualifying, Jim Sauter Jr. in the dash and heat and Jay VanDerGeest the heat and feature. In the CWSSA Super Stocks Merle Weinfurter had quick time, Allan Sankey won the dash, Jared Back and Keith Bohmsach heat winners and Andy Simonis feature winner. The Legends division Russ Weiler set fast time, Dean Fisher won the dash, heat and feature, and Mike Bula also a heat winner. Rob Detwiler was the 1-Man Cruiser fast timer and feature winner, and Travis Zvolena won the heat.

Jay Vandergeest (#23) scored his first career Super Late Model feature victory when he claimed the main event at Marshfield Speedway.  He was joined by family and crew in victory lane.

Andy Simonis (#91) slipped past Larry Schultz for the lead of the Super Stock main evening during the closing laps of the contest.  He held on for the victory.

Dean Fisher (#55) stole the lead of the Legend Car feature race on the final lap and lead the field to the wire for the win.

Current 1-Man Cruiser point leader Robert Detwiler (#472) captured the feature race and extended his point lead.

Mike Dodson and Luke Hall (#55) won the 2-Man Cruiser for the second straight week here at Marshfield Speedway.

The Super Late Model feature saw Jay VanDerGeest grabbed the lead from his outside pole start. Pole sitter Eugene Gregorich Jr. ran second and John Frazier third. Lap four Frazier moved up to second, and lap eight Mark Mackesy worked up to third. Mackesy passed Frazier for second on lap 14. Jim Sauter Jr. drove into third on lap 15 and then to second on lap 19. Lap 24 Mark Eswein was racing third. At the finish VanDerGeest won, Eswein second, Dean LaPointe third, Jeff Weinfurter fourth and Rick Grunden fifth.

In the CWSSA Super Stock feature Matt Raykowski led the first three laps. Larry Schultz then took the lead and began to pull away. Jared Back ran in the second spot for five laps. Fast timer Andy Simonis took the second spot from Back on lap nine. It took Simonis twelve laps to chase down Schultz. At the checkered flag Simonis passed Schultz on the outside for the win. Schultz second, Allan Sankey third, Keith Bohmsach fourth and Merle Weinfurter fifth.

Robb Duffek led first in the Legends feature. Josh Schoenick led next and fended off the rest of the field until Dean Fisher took the lead from him on the white flag lap. Fisher won, Schoenick second, Dave Keays third, Russ Weiler fourth and Greg Gress.

Josh Bell in the 1-Man Cruisers led. Then Travis Zvolena led three laps. Rob Detwiler then led the next eight laps for the win. Don Tieman Jr. took second, Zvolena third, Josh Elmhorst fourth and Darrell Paschel fifth.

The winners of the 2-Man Cruiser race were Mike Dodson and Luke Hall. Dewey Meyer and Rick Mason Sr. second, and John Dupee Jr and Cory Steczyinski third.

The winner of the Wal-Mart bicycle was Michelle Nelson from Hewitt.

Next Saturday's events are sponsored by Marshfield News-Herald, Wisconsin Rapids Daily Tribune, Stevens Point Journal & WGLX 103.3 Bucks Night. All Admission is $3.00. Grandstand gates open at 5 p.m., qualifying at 6 p.m. and racing starts at 7:30. Divisions racing are Super Late Models, CWSSA Super Stocks, Mini Stocks, 1-Man Cruisers and 2-Man Cruisers.
