August 11, 2001; Marshfield, WI: - Friendly temperatures were upon us for the Porter Memorial/Marshfield News-Herald, WI Rapids Daily Tribune, St. Point Journal, WGLX 103.3 and Jensen Motors Bucks Night. Rick Grunden set fast time in the Super Late Models, and by doing so entered himself into the 5th Annual Race of Champions slated in September. Quick timer in the CWSSA Super Stocks was Andy Simonis. Johnny Bell, one win short of a clean sweep was fast timer in the 4-Cylinders and Rob Detwiler in the 1-Man Cruisers.
Mark Mackesy held the lead for the first half of the Super Late Model feature, from his outside pole start. Ben Pettis raced second for three laps until Jim Sauter Jr. took that spot. Sauter went to challenge Mackesy for the lead. Meanwhile Gary Back worked his way from eighth to third, and then took second from Sauter on lap ten. There was no stopping Back, two laps later he took the lead from Mackesy on the outside. Sauter also passed Mackesy, pushing him back to third. The first of two cautions flew on lap 17, for a spin on the backstretch, involving Jay VanDerGeest and Pete Kempf. VanDerGeest was unable to finish the race due to mechanical problems. On the restart, Back continued to lead, and Mackesy inched ahead of Sauter for second. Dean LaPointe running fourth and Troy Nelson fifth. Lap 20 the caution out again this time for Wayne Mackesy spinning in turns three and four. After Mackesy was already turned sideways, Robert Maynor T-boned him, as he was trying to avoid him. Both drivers were okay, but neither able to finish the race. With only five laps left, Back led and Sauter reclaimed second, Mark Mackesy third. Behind them Rick Grunden, Dean LaPointe and Troy Nelson battled for the third spot. At the finish line it was Back with the win, Sauter, Mackesy, Grunden and LaPointe. The CWSSA Super Stocks were led by Dave Pagels for the first two laps. Matt Raykowski led lap three, and lap four was led by Tim Plowman. The race was stopped on lap four, for an eight car pile up in turn two. Four cars remained in the pits after that. Tim Hintz took the lead from Plowman when the race resumed. Plowman second, Andy Simonis third, Cale Laessig fourth and Keith Bohmsach fifth. The yellow was out again on lap six for debris on the backstretch. Lap seven, Hintz held the lead, Simonis up to second, Laessig moved up to third. Laessig took second from Simonis for four laps, then Simonis took it back for three, and Laessig held it for the last three. Hintz won, Laessig second, Simonis third, Allan Sankey fourth and Bohmsach fifth. The 4-Cylinder feature ran green to checkered with close racing action. Lee Hoernke led the first two laps. Jason Feucht led the next six, but was unable to fend off Johnny Bell who took the lead on lap nine. Behind the leaders, Dan Arneson and Keith Wirtz held second and third for several laps. When Bell took the lead, Feucht fell to second, Arneson third, Wirtz fourth and Doug Adams fifth. Lap 12 lapped cars became a factor, but through it all the top five were able to keep their positions. Bell took home the win, Feucht second, Arneson third, Wirtz fourth and Adams fifth. The first two laps of the 1-Man Cruiser feature were led by Josh Bell. Brendan Klueckman ran second on lap one until Josh Elmhorst grabbed it for lap two. Lap three Elmhorst took the lead from Bell. Klueckman ran third, Greg Firkus fourth and Wayne Meyer fifth. Lap four Meyer passed both Firkus and Klueckman for third. Travis Zvolena broke into the top five on lap five. Zvolena then passed Firkus for fourth and the following lap Bell for third. Meyer moved up to second. Fast timer Rob Detwiler moved into the fifth spot on lap eight and then fourth on lap nine. Elmhorst won his first feature ever, Meyer second, Zvolena third, Detwiler fourth and Firkus fifth. The winners of the 2-Man Cruiser race were Jack Szymkowiak and Richard Cisewski. Second Bob Payne and Steve Bores, and Jeff Gotter and Larry Scholl third. The winner of the Wal-Mart bicycle was Cassandra Aspen from Tomah. Next Saturday's events are sponsored by Automated Products. We will also be having Powder Puff Racing. Extra money will be added to the Super Late Models with $550 to win the feature and $200 to win the Super Stocks. In the Super Late Models and Super Stock divisions, money for both 2nd & 3rd place will be added. Rock 'N Roll to Go will be here with their giant boom box and Gladiator Jousting after the races. Grandstand gates open at 5 p.m., qualifying at 6 p.m. and racing starts at 7:30. Divisions racing are Super Late Models, CWSSA Super Stocks, Legends, 1-Man Cruisers and 2-Man Cruisers. |
