Eric Fransen edges Terry Baldry to win
McLeodUSA MARS 100 at Marshfield!

April 28, 2001; Marshfield, WI: -  Eric Fransen of West Bend, WI held off a determined bid from Terry Baldry of Omro, WI to win the McLeodUSA MARS Late Model 100 to cap off the second night of racing during Spring Shootout 2001 at the Marshfield Speedway.

Fransen, who scored his second career win in the McLeodUSA MARS Series, pulled up on Baldry's rear bumper on lap 40. Fransen used the outside lane to get around Baldry on lap 44.

The only caution in the final half of the race flew when Jim Duchow spun off of turn one trying to avoid a slowing Jeremy Lepak. Gary Back, who led the 31-car field in qualifying with a lap of 17.743, chased down the two leaders, but then smoke began to pour out of his car and he retiredto the pit area with 20 laps remaining.

Rookie Jason Weinkauf led the first 25 laps of the race before Baldry shot past on the outside There were several restarts and the start of the race was briefly delayed due to rain.    Following Fransen and Baldry across the line was Mark Eswein, winner of both 2000 McLeodUSA MARS events at Marshfield Speedway. Rookie Todd Kluever came home in fourth place followed by Allen Check in a smooth run to fifth and Wayne Breitenfeldt in a determined run from a starting spot deep in the field.

Marvin Flick led the beginning of the CWSSA Super Stock feature. Matt Raykowski ran second until lap three when Duwayne Davis passed him. Steve Borski passed Tim Plowman and Davis for second on lap five. Lap six Borski took the lead from Flick. Plowman also got by Flick for second. Plowman led laps 11 and 12, then the caution came out for a spin in turns three and four. When the race re-started Keith Bohmsach took the lead and Cary Lyons second. Bohmsach won, Lyons second, Plowman third, Allan Sankey fourth and Brian Stroik fifth.

Lap one of the 1-Man Cruiser feature was led by Scott Rueth. Glen Bargender passed Rob Detwiler and Rueth for the lead on lap two. Don Tieman Jr. moved into third on lap seven, and then second on the white flag lap. Bargender won, Tieman second, Detwiler third, Travis Zvolena fourth and Jason Blenker fifth.

The team of Jason Kay and Cory Steczynski won the 2-Man Cruiser race. Jon Dupee Jr. and John Bruge second, and Jeff Gotter and Larry Scholl third.

Next week is the DJ's SpeedZone and Sternweis & Sons Concrete $3.00 admission if you bring a Dale Earnhardt Souvenir. Divisions racing are: CARQUEST Super Late Models, CARQUEST Super Stocks, Mini-Stocks, 1-Man Cruisers and 2-Man Cruisers. Gates open at 5 p.m., qualifying at 6 p.m. and racing at 7:30.
