Weinfurter and Sankey score victories at Marshfield!

May 27, 2001; Marshfield, WI: -  The weather was more cooperative for our Sunday night races. Gary Back set fast time in the Super Late Models, Cary Lyons was quick again in the CWSSA Super Stocks. Dean Fisher set the pace in the Legend division and Rob Detwiler in the 1-Man Cruisers.

Travis Zvolena (#04) earned top honors in the 1-Man Cruiser division this evening.

Greg Back jumped out in front of the pack when the green flag dropped for the Super Late Models. Before a lap was scored in the books Back spun out in turn four and was unable to continue. As lap one was scored with Mark Mackesy as the leader, Jim Sauter Jr. flew through the infield, hitting the wall and was also unable to continue.

When the race resumed Mark Mackesy still led, Jay VanDerGeest second, Pete Kempf third, Dean LaPointe fourth and Jeff Weinfurter fifth. LaPointe and Weinfurter went back and forth until LaPointe got the spot from Weinfurter and passed Kempf for third. Judd Brandl worked his way into third by lap 12. After lap 13 was completed VanDerGeest and Brandl got together on the backstretch, bringing out the caution. Before lap 14 was in Mackesy spun in turn four bringing out another yellow.

Weinfurter was now the leader, Rory Melbinger second, Gary Back third, Brandl fourth and Kempf fifth. Mackesy made it back into fifth spot by lap 20. Melbinger tried to chase down Weinfurter, and Brandl and Back were battling. Weinfurter went home the victor, Melbinger second, Gary Back third, Brandl fourth, and Mackesy fifth.

Duwayne Davis led the first seven laps of the CWSSA Super Stock feature. Allan Sankey came from his 14th place start to take the lead from Davis. Keith Bohmsach was close behind in second, fast timer Cary Lyons running third. Larry Schultz and Tim Hintz were running fourth and fifth. Schultz passed Lyons for third on lap 14. Sankey won, Bohmsach second, Schultz third, Lyons fourth and Hintz fifth.

The Legend feature saw Rick Jensen lead lap one, Eric Lokemoen lap two and Jensen took it back for the next five laps. Russ Weiler led lap eight, Dean Fisher lap nine and then Weiler was back for lap ten. Fisher passed Weiler for the lead on lap 11. Weiler stayed in second, Chad Schnitzler third, Tom Schnitzler fourth and Dave Keays fifth. Schnitzler and Keays diced back and forth. At the checkered flag, Fisher won, Weiler second, Chad Schnitzler third, Tom Schnitzler fourth and Keays fifth.

Shawn Stelzer led the first three laps of the 1-Man Cruiser feature. Glen Bargender led lap four, then Travis Zvolena led the next five laps. Josh Elmhorst led lap ten, Zvolena took the lead back for the win. Elmhorst second, Rob Detwiler third, Carpenter, Scott Rueth fifth.

The winning team of the 2-Man Cruiser race was Jon Dupee Jr. and John Brugh. Larry Brage and Don Nigh in second, and Nick Klimke and Sean Radue third.

TJ's Auto and 8th Street Auto $1,500 drivers bonus first place went to Rory Melbinger in the Super Late Models, second to Jeff Weinfurter. The Super Stock winner was Allan Sankey and second place was Keith Bohmsach.

Next Saturday is Superior Services "Say NO To Drugs" Night. Grandstand gates open at 5 p.m., qualifying at 6 p.m. and racing starts at 7:30. Divisions racing are Super Late Models, CWSSA Super Stocks, 4-Cylinders, 1-Man Cruisers and 2-Man Cruisers.
