Rossier best in Marshfield CWRA Late Model go at Marshfield!

June 20, 1998; Marshfield, WI: -  With rain threatening Marshfield Speedway again this season, the track hurriedly pushed through the program.  Paul Menard set a new Legend track record with a lap of 21.577 seconds.   Paul and Charlie Menard challenged each other for the win in every Legend event.

marsh989a.jpg (12086 bytes) Rex Rossier (#21) nailed down his first CWRA Late Model feature win of the season on Saturday night at Marshfield. Rossier made the winning pass with just four laps left in the race and then held off Rory Melbinger who has won three features already in 1998 at Marshfield.
Rookie Late Model pilot Brian Back (#98) has adjusted well to the powerful CWRA Late Models.  Back won the evenings dash event, he is also the current rookie point leader in CWRA. marsh989b.jpg (12317 bytes)

IN the CWRA Late Model feature race, Brian Seubert held the lead for the first two laps until John Dunbar passed him and help the top spot for the next eight circuits.  Dunbar was unable to hold off Pete Kempf and on lap 11, Kempf passed Dunbar for the top spot.

Rex Rossier hurriedly moved through the pack and came up behind Kempf on the 13th lap.  Rossier managed to squeeze by Kempf for the top spot on lap 16 and led the remaining four laps to the checkered to pick up the win.  Rory Melbinger the fastest qualifier of the evening, came up from his 12th place starting spot to take second, Kempf managed to hang onto third, while Jeremy Lepak and point leader Jeff Weinfurter rounded out the top five finishers.

Andy Simonis scored a win in the Super Stock trophy dash.  The car
Jason Szymkowiak scored his second Super Stock feature win of the season after taking over the top spot just before the halfway point in the race. has a long history of finding victory lane as it's former owner Jay Capek won the Super Stock title with it last season at Marshfield.

Cary Lyons led the first six laps of the CWSSA Super Stock feature.  On lap seven, Jason Szymkowiak took over.  Merle Weinfurter who started 12th, made his way through the pack and broke into the top five on lap 11.    Szymkowiak held on to score the win, with Dave Pagels second, Weinfurter charging to third, John Bell fourth and Judd Brandl finishing fifth.

marsh989d.jpg (12370 bytes) Larry Bruansky has run out of luck of late.   The Super Stock driver ended his night on a sour note when he flipped his car over after running off the racetrack.  Braunsky was not hurt in the incident, but his night was through.

Aaron Soderberg led the first five laps in the Legend feature but could not hold off fast timer Paul Menard.  Menard made his way from a 12th place start to first in just six laps.  Charlie Menard, wanting to challenge Paul, worked his way into second by lap nine.   The Menards were at it again, dueling for the lead.  Paul had fast time, Charlie came back to win the dash, and Paul rebounded to win his heat.   Paul would come out ahead again in the feature event.   Charlie took second, Ben Pettis claimed third, Soderberg fourth and Scott Brandt finished fifth.

Shawn Stelzer started out his evening on a good note taking his Monte Carlo to victory lane.  Stelzer always runs strong in the class both here and at Golden Sands where he competes on Friday nights. marsh989f.jpg (10811 bytes)

Fast timer Marv Flick started last in the Pure Stock division, which saw a photo finish.  Flick took the lead on the final laps and won by inches over Brian Stroik.  Todd Stelzer took third, Curt Blenker fourth and Curtis Turner nabbed fifth.

Robert Nordrum and Darrell Pashell won the Cruiser race.

Kristina Bergender of Marshfield was the lucky young lady who won the bike for the event.  The bike giveaway is sponsored by Target.

Marshfield Speedway is a half-mile asphalt oval, located just three miles west of Marshfield, WI on county trunk H.  Miller Time trials are set for 5:30 p.m. with racing to begin at 7:00 p.m.
