Kryzkowski and Melbinger split features at Marshfield!!

July 4, 1998; Marshfield, WI: -  After rain forced a delay of last week's features to this week.  Independence night was exciting with double feature events in all the classes.  Shawn Stelzer had a clean sweep of the evening winning last week's make-up feature plus all of tonight's scheduled events in the Pure Stock class.

Make up features were held during the evening resulting in more racing action for the fans.  In the regularly scheduled CWRA Late Model main event, Joe Kryzkowski (#77) made his way to victory lane, while earlier in the evening Rory Melbinger (#88) topped the field in the make-up feature.  Melbinger also set quick time during the eveningg.

Rory Melbinger was the winner of the make-up CWRA Late Model feature, Melbinger patiently worked his way through the pack and then benefited from a tangle between front runners Gary Back and Pete Kempf to score the win.   Johnny Bell, shot out front of the make-up Super Stock feature early and then held off a late charge by Judd Brandl to score his first ever Super Stock feature win at the track.

marsh9811c.jpg (7413 bytes) Taking over the lead!!  Joe Kryzkowski (#77) uses the outside line to power past early race leader Mike Budleski (#55).   Kryzkowski went on to win the feature race, while Budleski would have a strong race to finish in the second position.

In action scheduled for this evening's program, Mike Budleski led the first seven circuits of the CWRA Late Model feature but he was unable to hold back Smokin' Joe Krzykowski, who used the outside line to take the lead.  Joe then never looked back.  A caution flag just three laps from the finish filled his rear-view mirror with a full field of cars but Joe was able to hold them off for the win.   Budleski took second, Jeremy Lepak had a strong run to take third, point leader Jeff Weinfurter was fourth ahead of Melbinger who came from the fourteenth starting spot to claim fifth at the finish.

In the CWSSA Super Stock feature, Andy Simonis grabbed the lead on lap seven from Cary Lyons but he couldn't hold off Rudolph's Jeff Brandl and on lap nine Brandl took the lead.  Brandl went on to win the event, Jason Szymkowiak moved up from his tenth place starting spot to claim second just edging out Merle Weinfurter the nights fast qualifier who took third.  Keith Bohmsach and Dave Pagels rounded out the top five finishers.

First career Super Stock winner!!  Johnny Bell, a former track champion in the Pure Stock division took a season off to construct his Lincoln Continental Super Stock.  Tonight all the hard work paid off as he cam home with his first career Super Stock feature win in the "make-up" feature. marsh9811d.jpg (13309 bytes)

In the motorcycle feature, Rick Bretl of Appleton hopped off his broken 600 c.c. Honda and onto Steve Capstan's 600 c.c. Yahata with no practice and went out and won the heat and the feature in tonight's cycle races.  Troy Johnson of Big Falls on a 600 c.c. Woods-Rotax kept Bretl honest with a hard ride into second place but fell short on horsepower to Bretl's speedy  mount.  Curt Knitt of Shawano was the first 250 cc. to cross the line on his CKR Kawasaki taking third overall while Spencer's Cliff Eckes Jr. brought his Rotax 600 home fourth.

The signs of success can either be a checkered flag or a broom as seen in these photos.  In the left photo, Merle Weinfurter has a solid evening and made his way to victory lane after winning a Super Stock heat.  Weinfurter is closing in on the point lead in the division, while in the right photo Shawn Stelzer holds a broom signifying that he had a clean sweep of the evenings races in the Pure Stock division.

Shawn Stelzer made his way from a last place start in the Pure Stock feature to take the win.  Brian Stroik was second, Curt Blenker third and Brad Scholze nursed an ailing car home ahead of Marv Flick the the pair rounded out the top five.

John Dupee Jr. and Kevin Dupee held off a strong field of Cruisers to take that division's feature event.

Tim Weinfurter of Wisconsin Rapids won the Target bike giveaway.

marsh9811g.jpg (6556 bytes) Two-wheeled daredevils!!  Exceeding 100 MPH on the backstretch the motorcycle races made a return trip to Marshfield Speedway.   The program was swept by Rick Bretl (#59).  Here Troy Johnson (#66) gives chase and would eventually finish second in the feature race.

Next week is the Coca-Cola, Miller, Karau's Foods and WOSQ/WDLB Mid-Season championship races.  Trophies will be awarded by points.  The Legend cars will also be on hand for the evenings show.

Marshfield Speedway is a half-mile asphalt oval, located just three miles west of Marshfield, WI on county trunk H.  Miller Time trials are set for 5:30 p.m. with racing to begin at 7:00 p.m.
