Rookie Brain Back borrows car and scores first career CWRA Late Model feature win at Marshfield!!

July 18, 1998; Marshfield, WI: -  It was a great night for racing at the half mile Marshfield Super Speedway.  Brian Back of Vesper was able to cross the line first in a borrowed car tonight in CWRA Late Model racing action, while Judd Brandl of Rudolph has fast time and held on for a close win in the CWSSA Super Stock division.  In the return of the CENEX Mid-American Super Trucks, Jason Hicks from Lake Geneva grabbed the top spot.  Shawn Stelzer of Wisconsin Rapids did it again this week with a "clean sweep" in the Pure Stock division.

In the 20 lap CWRA Late Model feature, Brian Back grabbed the lead from Pete Kempf of Nekoosa on lap three and was followed by Rex Rossier of Plover.   The rest of the field battled for position with point leaders Jeff Weinfurter and Rory Melbinger of Marshfield heading for the front of the pack.  Weinfurter was able to get through the pack after starting tenth by lap four to capture the third spot.

A marked contrast in the evenings success!  In the left photo Baird Reffner (#88) made it to Marshfield Speedway's victory lane after winning the second heat race, he later would post a seventh place feature run capping a strong performance for the evening.   In the right photo, Dean LaPointe (#15) did not have as much success getting involved in a wreck early in the Late Model feature race.

By lap 10 the top spots were occupied by Back, Rossier, Weinfurter, Jeremy Lepak and Kempf.  Gary Back of Vesper charged through the field of cars and took over the fifth place on lap 16.  Melbinger tried hard for several laps to get past Baird Reffner of Wisconsin Rapids and succeeded in doing so on lap 18, with just two laps remaining.  The top five as the cars crossed the line included, Brian Back, Rossier, Weinfurter, Jeremy Lepak and Gary Back.

Judd Brandl had to work real hard for this evenings CWSSA Super Stock feature win after starting near the tail of the field.   Brandl set quick time earlier in the program making for a very successful evening.   Brandl is currently second in the standings a mere eight points behind leader Merle Weinfurter. marsh9813d.jpg (14754 bytes)

The CWSSA Super Stock feature saw newcomer Jim Cormack of Plover take the lead but by lap nine Jason Kirsling of Nelsonville was able to grab the top spot after a sixth place start in the field.  In third was Allan Sansky of Stevens Point who was followed by Cale Laessig of Marshfield.  Merle Weinfurter of Wisconsin Rapids and Judd Brandl of Rudolph were working their way through the field.  Bu lap 12, Brandl was second, Laessig third and Jason Szymkowiak of Stevens Point sitting fourth behind Kirsling.  On lap 15, Brandl got the lead as Kirlsing had trouble and fell out of the race.  As they crossed the line it was a four way battle ending as they reached the checkered flag with Bandl out front followed by Laessig, Szymkowiak, Merle Weinfurter, Cormack and Sansky.

marsh9813g.jpg (15116 bytes) The CENEX Mid-American Super Truck Series made their annual visit to Marshfield Speedway and Jason Hicks found the fast way around the half-mile paved oval.  The win was the first ever for Hicks behinds the wheel of a truck.

The CENEX Mid-American Super Truck features saw Al Brace of Wausau as the early leader but on lap four, Vinnie Wilkinson of Sandwich, IL, captured the top spot, while Jodi Clark of Buffalo, MN took over the third position.  On lap six, Clark passed Brace to take second.  On lap nine the top three were, Wilkinson, Clark and Jason Hicks.  Local native Kevin Peterson held down the fourth spot.  On lap 16, Hicks took the second spot from Clark and by lap 18 he took over the top spot from Wilkinson.  Terry Marzofka of Port Edwards passed Peterson for third with two laps to go and on the final lap he took third from Clark.  The final finishing order was Hicks, Wilkinson, Marzofka, Clark and Peterson.

In the Pure Stock feature, Shawn Stelzer took the early lead in the race on the third lap followed by Marv Flick of Stevens Point, Brian Stroik of Stevens Point and Brad Scholze of Wisconsin Rapids.  On lap 13, Curt Blenker was able to take the fourth spot as Marv Flick fell back in the field.  At the finish it was Stelzer, Stroik, Scholze, Blenker and Flick.

And the dash winner is....Andy Simonis took home a checkered flag in the Super Stock dash race. It's not a pretty race car but..it was fast enough to put John Dupee Jr. and Kevin Dupee into the winner circle in cruiser action!

Taking home the win in the Cruiser division were  the team John Dupee Jr and Kevin Dupee.  The Target bike giveaway was won by Julie Kryzkowski from Junction City.  Next week will be the Bill Sherman Memorial Race, plus the Legend cars will be on hand as part of the regular program which will also include CWRA Late Models, CWSSA Super Stocks, Pure Stocks and Cruisers.
