Gary Back sets fast time and charges to win in CWRA Late Model feature on Bill Sherman Memorial Night at Marshfield!

July 25, 1998; Marshfield, WI: -  Shawn Stelzer made it a three-peat after taking clean sweeps the past three weeks in the Pure Stock division at Marshfield.  Fast timer, Gary Back flew through the pack on the half-mile paved oval to win the CWRA Late Model feature after starting twelfth.   Jason Kirsling won the CWSSA Super Stock feature in a new car which he debuted last week, Kirsling was also the fast timer of the evening and came from the 12th place starting spot to take the win.  Paul Menard set a new track record in qualifying in the Legend cars and later came back to take that division's feature race.

Larry Lepak led the first eighteen of the 20 lap CWRA Late Model feature. Behind him, Chris Wimmer and Jeremy Lepak held second and third, while Keith Witt and Wayne Cottrell ran fourth and fifth in the early going.  On lap 13, Rory Melbinger grabbed fifth from Cottrell, one lap later he moved into the fourth spot.   On lap 16, Back who started 12th, advanced into the fifth spot.

Point leader Jeff Weinfurter started out the evening on a good note winning the CWRA Late Model dash.  Weinfurter got stuck in traffic in the feature however and finished seventh. Weinfurter is in a tight championship point battle with Rory Melbinger. A roller coaster evening!  Jeremy Lepak started out with things going his way winning the second heat.  In the feature however another car made contact with him while he was running second and he went off the track and was unable to finish the feature race.

On lap 18, contact between Wimmer and Jeremy Lepak sent Lepak off turn two and into the sand pile, forcing a caution flag.  With the field bunched up on Larry Lepak's rear bumper the running order behind him was Melbinger in second, Back in third, Cottrell in fourth and Bobby Turzinski running fifth.  On the white flag lap, Back moved into the lead with an outside pass of Larry Lepak.

Larry Lepak finished second less than a car length behind Back, Cottrell edged Melbinger for third, while Melbinger and Turzinski rounded out the top five.

The new car runs well!!  Jason Kirsling made his debut with this new CWSSA Super Stock last week.  Tonight things went well for the new ride as he scored quick time honors and later came back to win the feature.   Kirsling still uses his old ride at Golden Sands Speedway where he leads the standings. marsh9814d.jpg (16100 bytes)

Tim Plowman was the leader for the first three laps of the CWSSA Super Stock feature.  John Bell then took the lead.  By lap 16, Jason Kirsling had moved into second and closed the gap on Bell.  At the white flag Kirsling overtook Bell for the lead.  Kirsling won the event with Andy Simonis second, Jason Szymkowiak third, Merle Weinfurter fourth and Judd Brandl fifth.  Bell slipped on the final lap and dropped out of the top five.

Unbeatable??  Shawn Stelzer has been on a roll posting his third straight clean sweep in the Pure Stock division. During the month of July no one has been able to beat Stelzer to the finish line. Paul Menard handedly topped the Legend car feature, after earlier setting fast time and winning his heat. He was prevented from a sweep when Pat Hinner won the dash.

In the Legend feature, Russ Weiler led the first three laps until Dean Fisher took over.  At the halfway point Ben Pettis took the lead.  On lap 17 of the 20 lap race, Paul Menard, in a borrowed car, grabbed the lead.  Menard went on to win the race, Pat Hinner finished second, Pettis was third, Phil Bickley came from a last place start to claim fourth ahead of Curt Gnatzig who rounded out the top five finishers.

After only two laps, Shawn Stelzer took the lead in the Pure Stock feature.  Late comer Marv Flick moved up behind him.  Stelzer held on for the win, Flick took second, Brian Stroik was third, Curt Blenker fourth and Kevin Fisher was fifth.

Winners in the Cruisers event were the team of Rodney Feltz and Fran Esser.  Tammy Mancl from Auburndale won the Target bike giveaway.
