Rex Rossier best on "Bucks Night" at Marshfield Speedway
in CWRA Late Model action!!

August 1, 1998; Marshfield, WI: -  The Marshfield News Herald, Wisconsin Rapids Tribune and Stevens Point Journal "Bucks Night" was a huge success at the raceway.  All admission was a mere $2.00 to watch some of the finest racing in central Wisconsin right here at Marshfield Speedway.

marsh9815a.jpg (18283 bytes) Rex Rossier brought home the checkered flag for the second time during the 1998 season at Marshfield Super Speedway.  Rossier currently lies in the third position in the CWRA Late Model standings at the racetrack and is currently trying to close the gap on the leaders Jeff Weinfurter and Rory Melbinger.

Paul Menard set a new track record tonight in the Legends cars with a lap 0f 21.466 seconds around the half-mile paved oval, beating his mark from last week.  Local driver Tom Schnitzler won his first race here taking a Legend car heat and Butch Oertel also of Marshfield won his first win of the 1998 season scoring a win in the first Late Model heat.

Mike Budleski paced the first four laps of the CWRA Late Model feature.  On lap five Budleski fell back and Rex Rossier took over the lead.   Bobby Turzinski followed behind Rossier and moved into the second spot on lap six.   Joe Krzykowski was running third, top rookie Brian Back was fourth and Pete Kempf fifth.  On lap 13, Keith Witt grabbed the fifth spot from Kempf.

With a pair of laps to go Witt advanced into fourth and point leader Jeff Weinfurter climbed into the fifth spot.  At the checkered flag Rossier scored the win his second of the season, Turzinski took second, while Kryzkowski, Witt and Weinfurter rounded out the top five.

Keith Witt, earned a trip to victory lane claiming the third CWRA Late Model heat.  Witt would later be a contender in feature action where he finished fourth. For the first time in 1998, local driver Butch Ortel made his way to the winners circle.  Ortel made the trip after taking top honors in the first CWRA Late Model heat.

Weinfurter continues to pace the point standings in the Late Model division, however he is a mere four points ahead of Rory Melbinger who took sixth in tonight's racing program. 

In CWSSA Super Stock feature action, John Bell led the first lap of the race before Wesley Krause took over.  On lap four, David Pagels took the lead from Krause, with Keith Bohmsach moving to second, Scott Hamel in third, Gary Wosick fourth and Greg Back in fifth.  On lap six Andy Simonis entered the top five at Back's expense.  On the tenth orbit around the oval Bohmsach fell back to the fourth spot.

Cale Laessig was moving through the field fast and made his way up to third on lap 14 running behind Pagels and Wosick.  Merle Weinfurter was also on the move and took away the third position from Laessig on lap 16, after starting in the tenth spot.  At the checkered Pagels took the win, Wosick was second, Weinfurter claimed third, while Laessig and Jason Szymkowiak rounded out the top five.

Tom Schnitzler led the first eight laps in the  Legend feature until Duwayne Vertone took over the lead.  Paul Menard moved from a 12th place starting spot into the lead on lap 16 and held on for the win.  Vertone finished in second, Pat Hinner got third, while Schnitzler and Ben Pettis completed the top five.

The Legend cars made an appearance for the second week in a row.  Here Duwayne Vertone, put his sharp looking racers in the winners circle after winning the dash.  He also took second in the feature race. marsh9815g.jpg (12719 bytes)

Brian Stroik led the Pure Stock feature followed by a constantly changing field behind him.  Marv Flick was running second and almost took the spot home until Curt Blenker beat him out at the checkered.  Stroik won, Blenker was second with Flick, Kevin Fischer and Greg Bernard in the top five.

Winner of the cruiser event were Rod Feltz and Fran Esser.   The Target bike giveaway winner was Brandon Hall of Marathon City.

It is a busy week of racing next week at Marshfield Speedway, with the regular Saturday night program of CWRA Late Models, CWSSA Super Stocks, Pure Stocks and Cruisers running on Saturday Night August 8th.  Miller Time Trials at set to begin at 5:30 p.m., with racing action getting underway at 7:00 p.m. 

Then on Tuesday evening, August 11th, Dick Trickle will be at the raceway signing autographs on the special program.  A full racing slate is scheduled for the evening with normal starting times.
