July 24, 2001; Eagle
River, WI. - The weather was cooler but the action was hot at
Miller Lite night at the races, Tuesday, July 24th, at Riverside Raceway. After the
national anthem, a moment of silence was observed for Ken Glembin who passed away July
20th. Ken built and operated KG Raceway until it was sold in 1997 and became Riverside
Raceway.
In heat one of the Bandits,
Tim Rosemark ran down Dustin Miller to capture the victory. Heat two had Rich Rosemark
lead from flag to flag with Dan Zelton second and Bruce Belland third.
In the Pure stock heat
number one Chad Rosinski led until he and Brian Slizewski came together going into turn
one on the last lap. They went to the back giving the lead and eventual win to Victor
Bodamer with Tom Nolda in second and Slizewski third. In heat two the early leader, Bo
Bennish, went onto win with Jeremy Melton second and Marlys Scharf third.
The Street Stock's first
heat saw John Johnson lead early and hold on for the win. Shawn Bialas finished second and
Ken Valeria third. In the second heat, Neal Slizewski led early but spun and hit the wall
hard. On the restart Fritz Scharf took the lead and kept it. Mike Vogt ended up second and
Ollie Schoonover third.
Bob Kleinschmidt overtook
Ken Smith to win the Miller Lite A-Mod Heat. Scott Blamberg finished second and Guy Carly
third. Eagle River Distributing and Miller Lite had lots of goodies, which they gave away
during intermission.
The Bandit feature race had
the closest finish of the night. Tim Rosemark edged out Bruce Belland at the finish line
with Rich Rosemark coming in third.
The biggest field of Street
Stocks of the season came to the line next. Early on Joe St Germain and John Johnson came
together on the front stretch sending Johnson to the back. Shortly after, Fritz Scharf and
Ollie Schoonover had a similar incident and Scharf went to the back. Mike Boyd had the
lead through all the restarts, but eventually gave way to Ken Valeria and Fritz Scharf.
That's how they finished with Valeria winning, Scharf second and Boyd third.
Next came the Miller Lite
A-Mods. Guy Carley looked like he might get his first victory as he was in control through
the early laps. On lap ten, Carley lost control and hit the front wall ending his bid.
Chad Boettcher took over first place and went on to win with Kleinschmidt second and Ken
Smith third.
In the Pure Stock feature,
cautions were the order of the day. One involved Victor Bodamer who took down several
sections of guardrail and was up on two wheels. Through it all, Bo Bennish held the lead
and went on to win in what was a strange finish. Chad Rosinski who had been running in
second place spun on the last corner of the last lap. He then backed up across the finish
line finishing fifth. Bodamer ended up second and Chad Lederer third.
In the biggest group of
Street Eliminator drivers of the season, the apparent winner was disqualified and Thad
Boettcher was declared the real winner after three rounds of racing. The Street Eliminator
class is open to legal street cars that run one on one for one lap. For rules contact Don
