Point Leaders Anderson, Scharf win at Riverside Raceway!
By Jeremy Mayo

July 8, 2003; Eagle River, WI. - Boone's Building Supply Night started out with a bang as Hollywood stunt man Deathwish Dan Elders wowed the fans with a death-defying performance. After Elders was done, it was the drivers' turn to wow the fans. They did not disappoint.

In the WISSOTA Midwest Mods presented by Miller Lite, eight cars took to the track for the heat race and it did not take long for the top two in points to stage a battle. Duane Dunbar lead points leader Scott Anderson in the resumption of a battle from last week's feature that ended when Dunbar cut a tire. This time, Dunbar's tires stayed inflated and Anderson could not
get by.

Shane Halopka made his season debut at Riverside on this night and drew the pole for the WISSOTA Midwest Mod feature. Halopka had a strong run as he held the lead over Scott Anderson early on. Halopka gave up the lead when
lapped car Tim Frantz impeded his progress.

Frantz's car stalled on the front stretch a few laps later, bringing out the caution and setting up a five-lap shootout for the win. Halopka got to the inside of Scott Anderson on the restart, but Anderson held off Halopka, pulled away and claimed his second straight feature victory at Riverside.

There was a good battle in the heat race for the WISSOTA Street Stocks. Ken Valeria took the lead on the opening lap, but John Kallas was hot on his tail. Kallas, tired the inside line to get around Valeria, but could not get the job done in the early laps. Kallas tired the inside one more time as the cars came off of turn four, looking for the white flag, but spun out. Valeria cruised to the easy victory and Kallas dropped all the way back to seventh.

Just as in last week's Firecracker 40, Fritz Scharf and Dan Zelten sat on the front row and Zelten took the early lead. Zelten slipped on lap two and allowed Scharf and Bruce Belland to get by. Belland set his sights of Scharf, but got a little too aggressive and spun Scharf going in to turn three on lap nine.

Belland was sent to the tail end of the lead lap but on the restart began his charge back toward the front. That charge ended a couple laps later when he dove to the inside of Ken Valeria in turn three, got loose and spun in turn four collecting Valeria, who only suffered minor damage and Kevin Maulson, who lost both rear wheels.

When the race resumed, Fritz Scharf found himself in front of Dan Zelten. Zelten tried to get around Scharf, but on a night that proved to be difficult in terms of passing, the rookie Zelten could not get by. Scharf, Zelten and Valeria were the three cars that finished on the lead lap.

In the Pure Stocks, B.J. Slizewski worked his way around Ryan Valeria in the early going and cruised to an easy victory over Pete Luedke. The fans loved the finish of the second heat race. Rob Rodziczak battled Neal Slizewski for the victory. Coming to the finish line, they made contact and slid across the finish line sideways. Rodziczak's car got to the line first and took the win.

Pete Luedke got the lead early on in the feature for the Pure Stocks, and cruised to the victory. The action was for second as Chad Rosinski led a big group of cars on the last lap. Several cars got together and some of them spun before they crossed the finish line. Track officials deemed that Rosinski caused the pile up so they sent him to the end of the lead lap and reverted back to running order as the cars received the white flag to determine the finishing order.

The Bandits and Super Bandits ran separate heat races, but did not have enough cars to run separate features. The Super Bandit feature went to Brandon Miller, who led every lap. James Williams in his second time out took the win in the Bandit heat.

In the combined feature, Jordan Kurtti got by Brandon Miller in the early going and began to pull away. Super Bandit points leader Phil Malouf picked his way through the field, got to second on lap twelve and began to gain on Kurtti. Phil Malouf made his challenge on the final lap, but as was the pattern for the night, the inside line out of turn four was not the fast way around the track. Malouf tried the inside and was defeated by Kurtti by less than a car-length.

Racing continues next week at Riverside as First National Bank comes on board as the feature sponsor and presents the Kids Money Grab during intermission.
