July 22, 2003; Eagle River, WI. -Two-time WISSOTA
National Late Model Champion, Pete Parker, was one of the Scott Anderson had the car to beat in the WISSOTA Midwest Mods Presented by Miller Lite. Anderson raced with Guy Carley early on in the heat race for the class, but passed him cleanly on lap five and cruised to the win. Anderson then drew the pole position for the feature and said goodbye to the competition. Anderson dominated and won a cleanly run feature, which was only slowed once due to caution. Duane Dunbar finished second, but spent a large amount of time trying to pass Troy Smart for position. Smart, after being forced to take two weeks off with engine problems, finished third followed by Guy Carley and Spencer Bolte. Dan Zelten and Fritz Scharf have staged battle a couple of times in the WISSOTA Street Stocks this season. They did so again in Street Stock heat. Zelten held Scharf at bay and took the win. Bruce Belland drew the outside pole for the feature, got to the lead and murdered the
competition. The battle was for second position as Dan Zelten held Ken Valeria, Fritz
Scharf and Kevin Maulson behind him. Zelten had a mirror full of experience behind him but
in the end held on for second.Adam LaFriske had an auspicious start to his season at
Riverside as he won The feature for the Pure Stocks began slowly as two early yellow flags slowed the pace, including one that took out point co-leader, Rob Rodziczak. Adam LaFriske led after lap one, but slowed, handing the lead to Mark Schuenemann. Schuenemann slowed after a few laps in the lead. His problem was terminal and he took his car to the infield. Marlys Scharf, the other point co-leader took the point with Schuenemann's misfortune, but she was being hounded by B.J. Slizewski. Slizewski was able to keep the gap between him and Scharf within two car lengths, but could not make the move inside. Marlys Scharf regained sole possession of the point lead in the Pure Stocks with the sweep. B.J. Slizewski lost little ground with a second place finish. Joel Miller was third. Rookie Ryan Valeria scored his best finish of the season with a fourth in the feature. Ron Reese was fifth. Phil Malouf made short work of his Super Bandit competition as he cruised to a heat
race win. Justin Lannet won the heat race for the Bandits. Lannet started on the pole for
the combined Bandit/Super Bandit feature looking to be the second driver in as many weeks
to pilot a regular Bandit to victory. It was not going to be easy. Phil Malouf was the
first to make a Lannet pulled away in the middle stages of the race, but his Bruce Crossing comrade, Jordan Kurtti was charging fast. Kurtti made his way past James Williams for second with three laps to go and started to close in on Lannet. On the final lap, Kurtti made it to Lannet's back bumper, but could not pull off the inside pass on the final lap. Justin Lannet made it two in a row for Bandit drivers in combined features with his victory. Kurtti settled for second followed by James Williams, Dustin Miller and Eli Gustafson. Heidi Diers only managed a sixth place finish, but did enough to pass Scott Scharf and take the lead in the Bandit points. Racing returns to Riverside on Tuesday, July 29, on Coca-Cola Night. |
