Valeria Returns to Greatness at Riverside!
By Jeremy Mayo

July 27, 2004; Eagle River, WI. - For the second straight week, beautiful weather meant a great fan turn out at Riverside Raceway. On Miller Beer of the Northwoods Night, the fans were treated to a nostalgic race in the Fire-Up Fireworks WISSOTA Streets Stocks featuring two of the greatest names from the past few seasons in their Riverside returns.

Photo Highlights

Looking at the Fire-Up Fireworks WISSOTA Street Stock field, it seemed as if the fans were taken back in time, seeing the cars of Fritz and Tate Scharf and Ken Valeria all on the racetrack again.

Fritz Scharf and Ken Valeria wasted no time renewing their old friendly rivalry in the feature. Fritz took the early lead from the pole, only to have Valeria charge from behind and take the lead with seven laps to go. Valeria's car was strong as he swept the evening's action. Fritz Scharf came home second. John Kallas made gains in the points with a third place finish.

Justin Jones made a return trip to Riverside Raceway in the Miller Lite WISSOTA Midwest Mods. Since we last saw the Onamia, Minnesota driver, Jones has slipped to fifth in the National WISSOTA Midwest Modified point standings. Jones started his night well by winning the heat race from the outside pole, but struggled a bit in the feature.

The top two in the Miller Lite WISSOTA Midwest Mod feature were no surprise. Jerry Grasse and Bob Richardson ran nose to tail the entire race. Richardson's best efforts to take the lead were dashed when Troy Smart spun, bringing out the caution with nine laps to go.

On the restart, Grasse pulled away slightly from Richardson and claimed his third straight feature victory at Riverside, and fourth of the season. Richardson came home second. Bob Kleinschmidt finished third and claimed his best feature finish of the season. Guy Carley added to his point lead, finishing fourth. Justin Jones rounded out the top five.

In the Pure Stock feature, Rob Rodziczak found himself running second again in the waning laps. This time, the leader was Chad Rosinski, making his first trip to Riverside in nearly a year. Rodziczak, determined not to finish second for a third straight week dove to the inside of Rosinski off of turn two with two laps to go.

Rodziczak completed the pass in turn one on the final lap and held on to claim his fourth feature victory of the season. Rodziczak blew his lead over Pete Luedke in the Pure Stock points wide open, capitalizing on Luedke's tire problems in both the heat and the feature.

For the second time this season, the Bandits and Super Bandits had enough cars to split up the features. Steve Justin took advantage of racing with the Bandits, and lowest finishing Super Bandits from the heat race to claim his third feature of the season at Riverside.

Scott Scharf dominated the Super Bandit feature, leading every lap from the pole to take his first feature of the season in just his second feature start. KGL Racing teammates Eli Gustafson and Jordan Kurtti struggled to third and fifth place finishes respectively. Gustafson took a four-point lead in the Super Bandit points over Kurtti, but his lead in the overall
standings is now only two points, over Bandit driver Steve Justin.

Racing continues next Tuesday at Riverside Raceway on Boone's Building Supply Night featuring the 3rd Annual 4-Cylinder Shootout. Bandits and Super Bandits from throughout the Northwoods and Upper Peninsula of Michigan will
compete for the top prize of up to $250.
