Gustafson Wins 4-Cylinder Shootout!
By Jeremy Mayo

August 3, 2004; Eagle River, WI. - Good weather, great attendance and the best car count of the 2004 season
meant that Boone's Building Supply Night was another great night to be at the Riverside Raceway. The main event was Riverside's 4-Cylinder Shootout where Riverside's top drivers found fierce competition from racers throughout the Northwoods and Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

Riverside Raceway regulars Steve Justin, Dustin Miller and Eli Gustafson were the top three qualifiers out of the heat races. It looked as if the feature maybe a bit of a run away as Justin's cut of the cards yielded a two, meaning only the front row of the feature was inverted.

The race was anything but a runaway. From the pole, Miller lead the first seven laps of the 25-lap feature, but Steve Justin wrestled the lead away on lap eight and Miller got involved in an incident with Jay Wilberding, forcing both Miller and Wilberding to the back of the pack.

Justin held the lead until lap 17 when Eli Gustafson was finally able to get around to the inside. From there, Gustafson pulled away and took home the $200 winner's share of the purse, becoming the third different winner of the 4-Cylinder Shootout in as many years.

Steve Justin finished second and was one of the two regular bandits to crack the top five in the most competitive 4-Cylinder Shootout yet. The rest of the top five was filled with drivers making their first start at Riverside Raceway for the 2004 season.

Dean Wascher, representing Adventure Mountain Speedway in Greenland, Michigan, finished third driving the car normally piloted by his wife, Lena. Jamie Hedlund, representing Norway Speedway in Norway, Michigan finished fourth in his first start on dirt. Defending champion Ryan Rohacek, representing TNT Speedway in Three Lakes rounded out the top five.

The racing was exciting through out the night. Bruce Belland took a big hit in the Fire-Up Fireworks WISSOTA Street Stock point standing as a cut tire in the heat race lead to a ninth place finish. Mark Schuenemann finished second in the race and then lead the final 16 laps of the Fire-Up Fireworks WISSOTA Street Stock Feature, holding off Lee Christjohn, Ken Valeria and a hard charging Belland to take his second feature victory of the season. Schuenemann, with his great performance moved from 14 to just three points behind Belland with five points nights remaining.

The point lead in the Miller Lite WISSOTA Midwest Mods changed hands again, this time an accident at Eagle Valley Speedway on Sunday, kept Guy Carley from racing on Tuesday. Troy Smart inherited the point lead and appeared to
be capping a fine night off in style by dominating the first 14 and three quarter laps of the 15-lap feature.

Things got interesting in the final quarter lap. In the most bizarre and thrilling finish of the 2004 season, Smart got sideways coming through turn four, losing all of his momentum in efforts to save the car. That allowed Bob Kleinschmidt and Jerry Grasse to close in. Kleinschmidt and Grasse both checked up to avoid hitting Smart. Once everyone got back in the gas, the result was a three-wide drag race for the win.

Kleinschmidt was the quickest of the three to get back on the gas and took the win, and a clean sweep by a foot and a half over Jerry Grasse, who edged out Troy Smart for second by three inches.

Second place in the Pure Stock point standings, Pete Luedke had a splint on his right pinky finger after injuring it while working. That little handicap was not going to stop him from dominating the Pure Stock feature. Luedke led the final 11 laps of the race only to have lapped traffic nearly cost him the win. Luedke earned a clean sweep and gained two points on Rob Rodziczak, who finish second in the feature for the third time in the last four weeks.

Racing continues next Tuesday at Riverside Raceway. As a special treat for the fans, skydivers will be brought in from Pulaski, Wisconsin and will descend from 5,200 feet during the National Anthem.
