Grasse Continues Midwest Mod Dominance at Riverside!
By Jeremy Mayo

August 17, 2004; Eagle River, WI. - A damp morning gave way to a sunny afternoon leaving perfect track conditions for the drivers on 94.5 FM WRJO Night at Riverside Raceway. The result was one of the cleanest and fastest nights of racing in Riverside's history.

Photo Highlights

Skydivers from Green Bay Skydivers kicked off the show with an awe-inspiring descent from 5,000 feet. From there, it was the drivers' turn to show off.

Mark Schuenemann won the Fire-Up Fireworks WISSOTA Street Stock heat race to pull even with Bruce Belland for the point lead. Belland had no interest in sharing the point lead and changed that quickly in the feature.

Belland took the lead from the outside pole and crushed the competition in the Fire-Up Fireworks WISSOTA Street Stock feature, winning by nearly a half lap over John Kallas. Schuenemann drew a poor starting position for the feature and could only work his way up to the fourth position. With the win, Belland now has a four-point cushion over Schuenemann with three point nights remaining.

Jerry Grasse won his fifth feature of the season at Riverside in the Miller Lite WISSOTA Midwest Mods. While Grasse led all 20 laps, he had a persistent challenge from Bob Richardson. Richardson pulled to the inside of Grasse a couple times, but his crew missed the set-up slightly causing his car to push in turn four and lose ground to Grasse. Richardson still had a solid performance and closed to within nine points of Troy Smart for the lead in the Midwest Mod Points.

Rob Rodziczak and Pete Luedke continued to show that they are the two most dominant cars in the Pure Stock class. Both drivers won their respective heat races and Rodziczak came back to dust the field in the Pure Stock feature. Ryan Valeria snuck in between Rodziczak and Luedke and finished second. Rodziczak, who has finished either first or second in each Pure Stock feature this season, has and 18-point advantage over Luedke.

The lone major incident of the night came in the Bandit/Super Bandit Feature. Steve Justin while working his way through the field was tapped from behind by Dustin Miller. Justin went for a skid down the front stretch and ended up slamming head-on into the outside concrete. Justin was unhurt in the incident, but his car was out of the race, dealing him a big blow in his quest for the overall Bandit championship.

The rest of the race panned out like many Bandit races have this season, with KGL Racing dominance. Jordan Kurtti got to the early lead and checked out, while Eli Gustafson had to pick his way through the pack. Gustafson got around Chad Schinke for second completing the KGL one-two finish. Gustafson has a commanding 18-point lead over Kurtti in the Super Bandit Standings and had a 10-point lead over Justin in the overall standings.

In total, only seven caution flags waived on the night in the ten races run. The result was a show that lasted two hours and five minutes, one of the quickest shows in Riverside's eight-year history.

Racing will continue next Tuesday night at Riverside as Jensen-Akins Hardware and WJFW NBC 12 team up to sponsor a night of racing which will include the Eagle River 30 WISSOTA Street Stock Special.
