June 29, 2004; Eagle River, WI. - A beautiful summer evening greeted
the largest audience of the season at
Riverside Raceway on Tuesday Night. With Independence Day upon us, the fans were treated
to fireworks both on and off the racetrack.
Ten Miller Lite WISSOTA Midwest Mods showed up in preparation for next week's Up North
Poured Foundations Firecracker 40. The drivers again proved that ten or more Mods is the
recipe for a lot of action, and a lot of cautions.
While there were no big wrecks,
five cautions cut the 20-lap feature to just
10 laps. Those ten laps saw a fierce battle for the lead between point leader Pat Zdroik,
Jerry Grasse, and Duane Dunbar who made his season debut.
Zdroik and Grasse brushed against one another a few times while they battled for the lead.
Dunbar lurked just a couple lengths behind in third, waiting for the leaders to slip up.
The battle lasted the entire race, but when Troy Smart spun out on lap 11, the race was
declared official.
By winning his heat as well, Zdroik made big gains over Guy Carley in the points. Zdroik
now enjoys a 16-point lead. Jerry Grasse finished second. Duane Dunbar was third. Bob
Richardson and Carley rounded out the top five.
The broom was also out for Rob Rodziczak. After defeating Ryan Valeria in the heat race in
a battle similar to the one they had two weeks ago in the feature, Rodziczak came back and
quickly picked his way from the sixth starting spot to lead the feature on lap three.
Rodziczak quickly opened up a fifteen car-length advantage over Pete Luedke, but that lead
was erased when Ron Reese and Ryan Valeria got together in turn four, sending Valeria
perilously close to the tires protecting the pit road entrance.
Rodziczak picked up where he left off, pulling away from Luedke in the final laps to claim
his third feature victory of the season. Luedke minimized the points he lost by winning
his heat and finishing second in the feature. Last week's winner Lee Schuppler finished
third. Keith Durand celebrated his fortieth birthday with a fourth place finish and Ryan
Valeria recovered from his incident to finish fifth.
With Roger Walker absent on Tuesday night, there would be a new point leader in the
Fire-Up Fireworks WISSOTA Street Stocks. Bruce Belland shored up the honor with a solid
night, winning the heat race and finishing second in the
feature.
It looked like rookie Mark Schuenemann was on the way to claiming his first Street Stock
victory. He had the field covered by nine car-lengths in the final laps. His hopes of
winning came to a crashing halt with four laps to go as a slight misjudgment coming out of
turn four sent him into the outside guardrail and grinding down the outside wall most of
the way down the front stretch.
John Kallas went from almost certain runner-up into victory lane as he held off Belland in
the final laps. Dan Zelten, Craig Tarsi and Chad Lederer were the remainder of the top
five.
It was the night of the Bandit at Riverside Raceway as some of the heavy hitting Super
Bandits struggled and some new names crept to the top of the leaderboard.
Eli Gustafson is optimistic that his primary car will be ready to go again as early as
Saturday, but until then he is still in his back up car, and struggling a bit. Gustafson
fell out of the feature on lap eight with two cautions. The first for losing his rear
bumper cover in turn one, the second for making contact with Bill Martin that sent Martin
skidding into the outside guard rail.
Meanwhile at the front, Steven Justin in his Bandit held off the Super Bandit of Dustin
Miller. Justin had enough power to keep ahead of Miller and was the first Bandit to beat
the Supers this year.
Jay Wilberding wound up third. Jordan Kurtti could only muster a fourth place finish for
the KGL Racing team. Rounding out the top five was 16-year old Trista Placek in her first
official race.
The fans were treated to two special events during the night. The first of which was the
spectacular Harry's Fireworks Show. The display last about fifteen minutes and was, as
billed, bigger and better than ever.
The second special event was a brotherly grudge match between Dustin and Brandon Miller.
Dustin took his Super Bandit and showed up his younger brother Brandon and his Pure Stock.
Brandon however cited the fact that he will be receiving a new engine this week, laying
down the challenge for a rematch.
Racing continues next Tuesday Night at Riverside, featuring the Up North Poured
Foundations Firecracker 40. The Miller Lite WISSOTA Midwest Mods will partake in this
special, 40-lap feature race with $300 going to the victor.
