July 13, 2004; Eagle River, WI. - Rain threatened once again at
Riverside Raceway on Tuesday night as dark clouds put a damper on the car and the fan
count for OK Auto/Auto Value Night.
One driver the rain did not deter
was Onacia, Minnesota's Justin Jones. Jones, second in WISSOTA Midwest Modified National
Points, made the interstate trip in hopes of gaining valuable points toward the National
Championship.
Jones raced cleanly in the Miller Lite WISSOTA Midwest Mod feature, finishing in the
second position. Jerry Grasse cruised to victory in the 20-lap event, leading the final 15
laps. Point leader Pat Zdroik had problems, falling out of the race after getting involved
in a lap five incident with Bob Kleinschmidt and Troy Smart.
A scary moment occurred on lap 13 when Chuck Gross spun into the infield in turn two, a
blind spot for track officials. As a result, Gross sat in the infield for a lap and a half
before the caution flag flew. Following precedent, track officials revert scoring back to
the last lap Gross completed to correct the mistake. Gross recovered for a fourth place
finish.
Bruce Belland dusted the competition in the Fire-Up Fireworks WISSOTA Street Stock
feature. Belland increased his point lead by leading all 15 laps of the race. John Kallas
and Mark Schuenemann dueled for second. Schuenemann followed Kallas for most of the race,
but made the pass on the final lap to take away the second position.
The best race of the night was in the Pure Stocks. Second-year driver Ryan Valeria took
the lead on lap five of the feature when Charlie Jackson spun out, on his own, from the
top spot. Valeria then held of point leader Rob Rodziczak in a thrilling duel in the final
laps to claim his first career feature victory.
The victory was a popular with many fans, including Ken Valeria, Ryan's uncle, jumping for
joy as Ryan took the checkered. Ken, the three-time Street Stock Champion at Riverside
finished fourth at TNT Speedway in Three Lakes on Sunday Night in his season debut. His
car and motor, however, sustained significant damage. Valeria still plans to race at
Riverside on August 3, when his sponsor, Boone's Building Supply sponsors the racing
action.
There was another scary moment in the Bandit/Super Bandit Feature. Trista Placek, in just
her second race had the throttle stick on her car. Placek slid up the racetrack in turn
four, glanced off the guardrail and slid into the side of Chad Schinke's Toyota, making
heavy contact. Both drivers were unhurt, and Schinke was able to continue for a few more
laps.
In the final laps, a duel appeared to be setting up between KGL Racing teammates Eli
Gustafson and Jordan Kurtti. Kurtti closed in and then flew by Gustafson coming to the
white flag as Gustafson fell off the pace as a radiator hose fell off the car. Kurtti
cruised to the win and took the lead in the Super Bandit point standings.
Racing continues next Tuesday Night at Riverside Raceway. It is the make-up night for the
Up North Poured Foundations Firecracker 40, a 40-lap WISSOTA Midwest Mods Special paying
$300 to the winner. Also, during intermission, the drivers will come out to the front
stretch for an autograph session, giving the fans a chance to meet the stars of Riverside.
First National Bank of Eagle River will be the sponsor.
