Grasse Walks Away with Firecracker 40 at Riverside!
By Jeremy Mayo

July 20, 2004; Eagle River, WI. - Nearly 1,000 fans turned out on one of the hottest nights of the year at Riverside Raceway both on and off the track. First National Bank sponsored the night's proceedings, which included the Miller Lite WISSOTA Midwest Mod Special, the Up North Poured Foundations Firecracker 40.

Rain postponed the race by two weeks. It was worth the wait for Jerry Grasse who took the lead from Chuck Gross at the 20-lap mark and cruised to his second consecutive feature at Riverside, and the $300 top prize and a $100 bonus from Chain O' Lakes BP/AMOCO.

The majority of the cautions occurred early in the race, but once things settled down, Guy Carley worked his way to second and Troy Smart wound up third. Carley and Smart are now first and second in points.

Despite a short field, the best race of the night was in the Fire-Up Fireworks WISSOTA Street Stock feature. John Kallas held the lead for most of the race, but Mark Schuenemann put the pressure on late. When Kevin Maulson spun out late in the race, the stage was set for a green-white-checkered duel.

On the restart, Schuenemann launched his assault. Schuenemann drove to the inside of Kallas going down the backstretch on the final lap. The two rubbed fenders going into turn three, sending Kallas offline and Schuenemann to his first Street Stock victory at Riverside. Bruce Belland snuck by Kallas for second.

The big story out of the two WISSOTA classes came when the Midwest Mods Chuck Gross and point leader Pat Zdroik and the Street Stock of Dan Zelten were found to have carburetors that failed a post-race inspection. The three machines, all of which come out of the same shop, were disqualified from their respective features and the drivers are subject to further fines and suspensions from WISSOTA.

In the Pure Stocks, it was a duel between the top two in the points. Rob Rodziczak and Pete Luedke won their heat races then squared off for a duel in the feature. For the second straight week, Rodziczak found himself second in the final laps of the feature, but unable to get around the leader.

Pete Luedke scored his second feature victory of the season and closed to within six points of Rodziczak for the lead in the Pure Stocks. Keith Durand, after ending up on his roof in a lazy rollover in the heat race, came back to finish third in the feature.

Steve Justin jumped out to the early lead and held of Eli Gustafson and beat the Super Bandits for the second time this season. Gustafson came home second as the Super Bandit points took another dramatic turn.

Gustafson and teammate Jordan Kurtti were both charging through the field in the opening laps. They went three wide with Jay Wilberding for third in turn three when Gustafson and Kurtti made contact sending Kurtti into the outside guardrail and cutting his right-front tire. Kurtti wound up eighth in the eight-car feature and with seven nights remaining, Kurtti and Gustafson are tied for the Super Bandit point lead.

Trista Placek was involved in her second big wreck in three races when she collided with Heidi Diers in the heat race after Diers spun in front of her. Despite front-end damage, Placek came back to score her second top five of the season in the feature.

Racing resumes next Tuesday at Riverside Raceway with Miller of the Northwoods the sponsor. To celebrate, all cans of Miller Beer products will be just $2 a can. Also coming up next week will be the kids' money grab, during intermission and the Powderpuff and Mechanics' races, following the features.
