August 1, 2006; Eagle River, WI. -
For the second straight week, Riverside Raceway lost the
battle with Mother Nature. Heavy rains Tuesday morning,
and the promise of more rain in the evening prompted
track owner/promoter Don Scharf to call off the night’s
racing action at around 12:45 in the afternoon.
“The inside of the corners are soup and the infield (pit
area) is full of mud,” Scharf said describing track
conditions during the noon hour Tuesday. Excess water
usually drains off into a small pond outside the turn
four guardrail, but heavy rains in the days leading up
to the race had filled the pond, leaving the water
nowhere to go.
Tuesday night was the fourth rainout of the season at
Riverside Raceway. That matches a season-high for
rainouts since Scharf took over operation of the
racetrack in 1997. Each of the two previous seasons had
four rainouts as well. Tuesday was also supposed to be
the make-up date for the Eagle River 30 WISSOTA Street
Stock Special. That race has no been postponed
indefinitely and maybe cancelled for the season.
Next Tuesday brings some of the best four-cylinder
racecars from the Northwoods and the Upper Peninsula of
Michigan to Riverside Raceway for the fifth annual
4-Cylinder Shootout. The winner of the event could take
home up to $260.
