Jason Zdroik found
himself in an interesting scenario in the Miller Lite
WISSOTA Midwest Mod feature. Bruce Belland had the lead in
the feature, but Riverside Raceway track officials
announced that they would penalize Belland two positions
for jumping a restart. The penalty would be enforced at
the end of the race, meaning that, Belland was racing for
third while Zdroik had the lead.
Neither Zdroik nor Belland knew the scenario while in
their racecars. In waning laps, Zdroik and Belland battled
on the track, with Zdroik getting ahead with five laps to
go. He went on to claim his first feature win of 2006 at
Riverside. Bob Kleinschmidt was credited for second, with
Duane Dunbar third. Belland was penalized back to fourth.
Class point leader Bob Richardson struggled on the night.
He worked his way up to third early, but spun in turn two,
brining out the caution. Richardson tried to work his way
back through the field, but could only manage a sixth
place finish.
Craig Tarsi had the car to beat in the Fire-Up Fireworks
WISSOTA Street Stocks. It was the action behind him
between the two point leaders that provided much of the
intrigue. Lee Christjohn and Chad Boettcher entered the
night tied at the top of the standings. Boettcher gained a
two-point advantage through the heat race.
Lee Christjohn provided the biggest threat to Tarsi’s lead
in the feature. He moved to the inside of Tarsi on lap
eight, but the two got together coming down the front
stretch. Christjohn spun, bringing out the caution.
With Christjohn at the back of the field, Boettcher had an
opportunity to take a sizeable lead in the points, but he
spun in turn one while battling for second with Jermey
Wolfe just five laps later.
Now Christjohn was back in position to either tie or pass
Boettcher for the point lead. Christjohn charged up
through the field and was trying to get around Wolfe and
the field came through turn four to the white flag, when
Christjohn spun again, bringing out the caution. It was
caution number two for Christjohn, and his race came to an
end in eighth place.
Tarsi pulled away from Wolfe in the final two laps to
score his first win of 2006 at Riverside. Chad Boettcher
finished fifth, but was able to extend his point lead to
five at the end of the night.
Pete Luedke won a caution-plagued Pure Stock feature. The
story, however were three drivers that were initially
disqualified for failing to report to post-race
inspection. In the drivers’ meeting, drivers were told
that the top five from every feature needed to report for
inspection. Charlie Jackson and Dan Vedder finished third
and fourth in the feature, but failed to report to the
tech-area. As a result they lost their points and pay from
the feature.
Also, class point-leader Jeff McDonald was initially
disqualified for the same infraction, but after the race,
track officials discussed the matter and ruled that
because McDonald finished sixth on the racetrack, he did
not need to go to inspection. McDonald’s finishing
position was restored, and his sixth place finish turned
to fourth because of the disqualifications of Jackson and
Vedder.
In other track news, Riverside Raceway has announced its
new make-up date for the Eagle River 30 WISSOTA Street
Stock Special. Following two rainouts, the track will
attempt to run the race on Tuesday, August 29. It is a
30-lap WISSOTA Street Stock Feature that will pay $300 to
the winner.
Racing continues next Tuesday at Riverside. Hot Laps will
start at 7:30, with racing at 8:00.
