Sometimes in the
sport of auto racing, everything goes your way.
Rhinelander’s Wayne Nylund had one of those nights Tuesday
at Riverside Raceway as he walked away with $200 an a
victory in Riverside’s Fourth Annual Pure Stock Special,
highlighting Hartman Well Drilling Night.
Nylund’s good fortune started at the draw window, where he
drew the pole for his heat race. A dominating heat
performance put him on the pole for the 25-lap feature.
Nylund got a good start, blowing past Addam Marten at the
drop of the green. From there, he built up a sizeable
lead. Chad Rosinski worked past Marten for second on lap
seven. Marten’s race only lasted a couple more laps as a
flat tire sent him into the outside guardrail in turn one,
bringing out the caution flag.
The race was slowed three times due to the caution, and
each time, Rosinski could not keep up with Nylund on the
restart. For Nylund it was a rare feat, as he led every
lap of his heat and feature in a dominating victory, his
second of the season at Riverside.
The big story in the special occurred in the inspection
area following the race as point leader Jeff McDonald’s
car failed post-race inspection. His engine would not idle
at 500 RPM for the specified 30 seconds. This infraction
of Riverside’s Pure Stock rules may have cost McDonald a
chance at the championship. He lost the points and prize
money he would have received for a fourth place finish in
the feature. Instead of leading the standings by one-point
with two nights to go, he trails Rosinski by 30 points,
with little time to make up the ground.
Eagle River’s Bob Richardson went along way toward sealing
a championship in the Miller Lite WISSOTA Midwest Mods.
Richardson’s nearest competitor in the point standings,
Jason Zdroik was not present and Richardson took
advantage.
Richardson started sixth in the feature, and nearly had
the lead on lap one. He took the lead off turn for on the
first lap, but his pass was nullified because of a
four-car wreck behind him involving Troy Smart, Rob
Rodziczak, Guy Carley and Nick Dolezal.
On the second start attempt, Cody Schmidt led at the end
of lap one, with Richardson second. By lap five,
Richardson worked his was to the front. Schmidt dropped
out of the race during a lap six caution for debris.
The final fourteen laps belonged to Richardson as he
picked up his seventh feature win in nine races this
season at Riverside. The final half of the feature saw
good battles for second and fourth positions. Bob
Kleinschmidt continued his strong performance as of late,
holding of Street Stock veteran Wayne Dean for second. Rob
Rodziczak held of Troy Smart for fourth.
Antigo’s Lee Christjohn earned some redemption in the
Fire-Up Fireworks WISSOTA Street Stock feature. After
bowing out early in the last two features, Christjohn used
his outside front-row starting position to take the lead
on the start. He then built a big advantage as the rest of
the field had difficulty getting by Neal Slizewski for
second. The rest of the pack, led by Jordan Kurtti finally
got by Slizewski on lap six, but by that time, Christjohn
had built a ten-car length lead.
The complexion of the race changed on lap ten when class
point leader Chad Boettcher spun out while battling Fritz
Scharf for third. Christjohn’s large lead was erased and
Kurtti applied the pressure on the restart.
Christjohn and Kurtti raced nose-to-tail the final eleven
laps of the feature. Several times, Kurtti tried to break
out of line and make a pass to the inside, but Christjohn
held him off every time and picked up his class-leading
third feature win of the season. Kurtti finished second
while Boettcher worked his way back to fourth, and left
the track with a 15-point advantage over Christjohn.
Kyle LeSieur of Lac du Flambeau dominated the heat and
feature in the Family Four Class. The rookie passed Kevin
Cogar on lap three of the 10-lap feature and checked out
from there. Coagr wound up second and Michael Diak, in a
new car, finished third. Diak was the driver hospitalized
after a rollover accident one week ago. He said he was
still a little sore from the accident, but otherwise all
right.
The final Tuesday night show of the season takes place
August 29 at Riverside Raceway. It will be sponsored by
Miller Beer of the Northwoods and will feature the Fire-Up
Fireworks WISSOTA Street Stocks in the Eagle River 30. The
race was scheduled to be run in July, but rain on two
consecutive nights pushed the race back. It will be a
30-lap special for the WISSOTA Street Stock and will pay
$300 to the winner.
Riverside Raceway’s track champions will be determined on
Season Championship Night, Sunday, September 3 and the
season will wrap-up with the annual Fan Appreciation Night
on Saturday, September 9.
