The most impressive
charge came from Bob Richardson, who won the first two
features of the season in the Miller Lite WISSOTA Midwest
Mods. Richards started in the eighth position for the
feature, but wouldn’t stay there long. The outside lane
proved to be the faster of the two on the start and
Richardson charged to fourth by the end of the first lap.
Richardson continued
to pick his way through traffic and by the completion of
lap two, had passed pole sitter Nick Dolezal for the lead,
which spelled trouble for the rest of the competition.
The caution flag
waived twice during the feature, once following engine
problems for Bob Kleinschmidt and once more for a Cody
Schmidt spin. Following each caution, Richardson easily
pulled away from the rest of the field and easily cruised
to his third feature win of the young season.
Fireworks were
plenty in the Fire-Up Fireworks WISSOTA Street Stocks.
Second year Street driver Jordan Kurtti worked his way to
the early lead and opened up a bit of an advantage while
the rest of the field sorted itself out. Lee Christjohn
eventually picked his way to second by lap five and set
his sights on another feature win.
Kurtti was not
willing to give up the lead easily. With six laps to go,
he and Christjohn began to battle side by side for the
lead. Christjohn took the lead with four laps to go with a
pass to the inside. Kurtti tired to fight back, and on the
next lap, made contact with Christjohn, who spun in turn
four.
Kurtti was put to
the back on the caution, but Christjohn’s win was far from
secure. Michael Truscott launched an attack for the lead
in the final three laps. Truscott was able to pull
alongside and briefly take the lead on the final lap, but
Christjohn was able to hold him off on the high side and
pick up his second feature win of the season at Riverside.
Repeat feature
winners told the story for the rest of the evening as
well. Chad Rosinski passed Steve Glinski with ten laps to
go in the Pure Stock feature to win his second consecutive
feature at Riverside. After problems on opening night,
Rosinski has charged to second in the Pure Stock points.
Meanwhile, Larry Leonarduzzi started in the final row, but
quickly worked his way to the lead. Leonarduzzi cruised to
his second feature victory of the season.
In other news, track
owner and promoter Don Scharf announced during Tuesday
night’s drivers meeting that this year’s Firecracker 40
WISSOTA Midwest Mod Special will be held Tuesday, July 11.
The of Bob Richardson’s main sponsors, Custom Built by
Richardson, Tiny Tap and Eagle Lanes have pooled resources
to bolster the purse for the event. The winner will take
home $1,000. Second place will win $750. Further details
on the event are expected to be released later this week.
Meanwhile, racing
continues Tuesday, June 27 at Riverside Raceway. Fire Up
Fireworks will put on the annual fireworks show at dusk.
The night’s races will be sponsored by Simac’s Plumbing
