Rain Halts Races at Riverside, Fireworks Rescheduled for July 4
By Jeremy Mayo

June 27, 2006; Eagle River, WI. -Fans at Riverside Raceway were supposed to be treated to the Fire-Up Fireworks Show Tuesday Night. Instead, Mother Nature threw in her own fireworks, halting the program after only two completed heat races.

Lightning filled the sky as dark clouds loomed to the west. The rains finally came at around 8:15. By 8:20, torrential downpours continued, and small hail was spotted. That is when the decision was made to cancel the rest of the night’s program at Riverside.

Simac’s Plumbing and Heating Night did see some good racing before the washout. Marinesco, Michigan’s Duane Dunbar drew the outside pole position for the Miller Lite WISSOTA Midwest Mod heat race. Dunbar quickly moved around Cody Schmidt to grab the lead on the drop of the green flag. Dunbar checked out from there and cruised to the win. Schmidt held on to second for most of the race, but was passed on the last lap by Jason Zdroik.

Bob Richardson was involved in a lap one incident as he, Mark Rose and rookie Nick Dolezal tried to go three wide down the backstretch. Dolezal and Richardson touched wheels, which nearly sent Dolezal for a spin. Both drivers corrected, but the altercation cost Richardson a lot of time. He fought back through the field during the remainder of the race and had to settle for a fourth place finish.

In the Fire-Up Fireworks WISSOTA Street Stocks, John Kallas and Chad Boettcher staged a side-by-side duel for the top spot during the first half of the race. Boettcher was finally able to use the inside line to pass Kallas and went on to win the heat. Kallas held off point leader Lee Christjohn for second.

Pure Stock rookie Will Roffers had a chance to experience life in the lead during the heat race for that class. Roffers took the initial lead from the outside pole. His reign at the top was short-lived however, as he spun coming out of turn four on the opening lap. Roffers went to the back of the field, and on the restart Steve Glinski took the lead.

By this point, the rain had started to pick up. Glinski soon came under attack from Chad Rosinski, who took the top spot away on lap three. Rosinski led until the caution flag, and eventually the red flag came out for rain.

Since the Pure Stock and the Family Four classes did not get a chance to complete their heat races, their night will be wiped from the books. It has yet to be determined if the WISSOTA classes will make up the night they started. An inquiry to WISSOTA had not received a reply as of midday Wednesday.

One thing is for certain; the Eagle River area will now have more fireworks to celebrate the Fourth of July with. Because of the rain out, the Fire-Up Fireworks Show has been rescheduled for the Fourth. Racing will still take place at its normal time on Independence Day with hot laps at 7:30 and racing at 8:00. Fireworks show will begin around 10:00. Boone’s Building Supply will sponsor the night of racing.
