Valeria Returns to Riverside’s Victory Lane
By Jeremy Mayo

June 12, 2007; Eagle River, WI. - A good car, a good driver and a difficult racetrack to pass on set up the ingredients for a thrilling feature in the Fire-Up Fireworks Tuesday at Riverside Raceway. When the dust settled a familiar face was back in victory lane.

Photo Highlights

Ken Valeria started from the pole in the 20-lap main event for the Streeters and had a hard-fought battle with Jordan Kurtti for the entire race. On the start, Valeria slid up the track in turn one. Kurtti drove to the bottom in a crossover attempt. Kurtti fell back in line and the two would run nose-to-tail much of the race.

At one point, it looked like any of five drivers could win the race. At halfway Valeria, Kurtti, John Kallas, Fritz Scharf and Michael Truscott formed the lead pack, with less than five car lengths separating the group.

In the closing laps Kallas, Scharf and Truscott faded a bit. Kurtti tried multiple time to get to the inside of Valeria, but could not make the car stick on the inside line. Valeria held on for his first feature win at Riverside this season and his first at the D-shaped oval since July 27, 2004.

Despite only having two cars in the class, the Family Fours had the wildest feature of the evening. Paul Scharf, driving for his son Eric on the night had a commanding lead with two laps to go in the feature, but suddenly, his car lost power on the backstretch.

By the time Scharf got things back together, Rhinelander’s Richard Barlowski had taken the lead. Scharf fought back and tried to retake the lead, but his last lap effort fell just over a foot short.

In other action at Riverside from Tuesday, Eagle River’s Chad Boettcher passed Rob Rodziczak on the eighth lap of the Miller Lite WISSOTA Midwest Mod Feature. The point leader went on to take the win in the caution-free 20-lap main event for the Mods.

Eagle River’s B.J. Slizewski was back in his uncle Bill’s car on Tuesday. For the second time this season, Slizewski checked out from the rest of the field and scored the feature win.

Racing resumes at Riverside next Tuesday night with Hot Laps at 7:30 and racing at 8:00 PM.
