June 19, 2007; Eagle River, WI. -
When John Kallas took the checkered flag two weeks ago at
Riverside Raceway, it marked the end of a three-year winless
drought at the D-shaped oval for the Hurley driver.
Kallas
made certain that his next winless streak would be a lot
shorter by notching his second win of the season at
Riverside on Tuesday night.
For
the second straight week, the best race of the night was the
Fire-Up Fireworks WISSOTA Street Stock feature. Chippewa
Falls’ Micheal Truscott, who entered the night fifth in
WISSOTA National Street Stock Points took the early lead
from the pole while Kallas made short work of Ron Van Dusen
and moved to second.
Those
two broke away as the rest of the field had trouble passing
Van Dusen, which lead to the first caution of the race on
lap seven. Jordan Kurtti got into the back of the Van Dusen
car, causing a spin.
When
the race restarted, Ken Valeria and Fritz Scharf joined the
battle for the lead. Those two stayed in the fray for a few
laps, but then lost the handle on their cars a little and
drifted back.
That
left Truscott and Kallas at the front to settle things
amongst themselves. Several times Kallas peeked to the
inside on the lead machine to no avail. Then with five laps
to go, Truscott washed up the racetrack a little in turn
four. That was enough for Kallas to slip by, take the lead
and eventually the win.
Kallas’
win coupled with a fourth place feature finish for Scharf
put Kallas atop of the Street Stock points at Riverside for
the first time this season. He sits two points ahead of
Scharf.
Some
familiar names came out of the woodwork in the Miller Lite
WISSOTA Midwest Mods on Tuesday. 2006 track champion Bob
Richardson returned as did multiple-time feature winner
Jason Zdroik to add flavor and cars to the class.
But
the night was Mickey Nosser’s. The long-time Mod racer from
Phillips made up for a lack-luster 2007 debut at Riverside
with his first feature win of the season.
Nosser
lead from flag-to-flag, but received plenty of pressure
early from Keith Troutman. The first 13 laps clicked by
caution free, but that changed when Bruce Belland’s car went
up in smoke and flames.
Belland had carburetor problems all night long and had a
tell tale puff of smoke before slowing and stopping in turn
four. A brief fire broke out in the engine compartment, but
it was extinguished quickly and Belland got out unscathed.
On the
restart, Nosser pulled away as Rob Rodziczak and Chad
Boettcher moved up to second and third. That is the way
things stayed until the final corner of the race when
Boettcher tried to pass Rodziczak, slipped and surrendered
third place to Richardson.
John
Johnson, Jr. had the pole for the Pure Stock feature and
shaped the complexion of the race when his right rear tire
went flat on the opening lap. Cars had to scurry to get
around the slow car, spreading out the field.
As
things settled down, Dicky Carlson took the lead and went on
the a flag-to-flag victory. He received pressure from Pure
Stock rookie Michael Diak for much of the race. Diak fell
about a car-length and half short, but had far and away his
best finish in the class to date, taking the runner-up spot.
Eric
Scharf had his toughest competition of the season in the
Family Fours on Tuesday. Track Owner, and Erik’s
Grandfather, Don Scharf allowed the more powerful 16-valve
four cylinder cars to run with the class again and Baraga,
Michigan’s Jeff Klopstein applied the pressure.
Scharf’s lead wavered from one to three car lengths
throughout the feature and on the final lap, Klopstein made
his best charge, pulling to the back bumper of the leader.
His efforts fell short and Scharf picked up his third win of
the season.
While
Bob Richardson was racing in the WISSOTA Midwest Mods in a
car owned by Kevin Maulson, he also brought his WISSOTA Late
Model to the track to show off. Richardson, who is currently
30th in the nation, was clicking off laps in the
low 16-second range just after intermission.
That
gave fans a taste of what will be coming next Tuesday as
FASTRAK Late Models visit Riverside Raceway for the first
time this season. The FASTRAK’s are similar to the WISSOTA
Late Models, but are limited to a crate engine.
Racing
next week is sponsored by Eagle River Inn and Super 8 Motel.
Hot Laps are at 7:30, with racing at 8:00 PM.
