Zdroik Holds off Richardson in Midwest Mods at Riverside
By Jeremy Mayo

July 12, 2007; Eagle River, WI. -  Eagle River’s Jason Zdroik and Bob Richardson were two of the top drivers at Riverside Raceway in 2006. After getting late starts in 2007, they are back in full force and staged a great battle for the win in the Miller Lite WISSOTA Midwest Mods on Tuesday.

On a cool, breezy Simac’s Plumbing and Heating Night at the track, Zdroik and Richardson quickly moved to the front of the field with Chad Boettcher in close pursuit.

Things began to heat up on lap eight following the second caution of the race for a spin by Mike Boyd. On the restart, Richardson pulled to the inside of Zdroik and the two battled side-by-side for a couple laps before the yellow flew again for a spin by rookie Vaughn Smart.

On lap 12, Richardson brushed the wall in turn four. That appeared to affect the handling on his car as he drifted further off the lead. Zdroik appeared in control, but nearly handed Richardson the race with four laps to go as he pushed out of turn for and lost most of his lead.

Richardson tried to chase down Zdroik in the last couple of laps, but could not do so as Zdroik took his first win of the season at Riverside in three starts. Rhinelander’s Rob Rodziczak passed Boettcher for third in the middle stages of the race and now only sits six points behind Boettcher for the class lead.

The Pure Stocks put on an entertaining show at the end of the night as a mist began to fall. Michael Diak held the lead for most of the race, but Phelps driver Dicky Carlson picked his way from the back row and into contention for his third straight feature win.

Diak held of Carlson for several laps, but on lap 15, Carlson bumped Diak in turn two, opening the door for him to take the lead. Diak began to fall back as his left rear tire went down.

Undaunted, Diak continued to drive and finished the feature on the under-inflated tire, holding off Chad Rosinski, Neal Slizewski and Dennis Lacrosse (driving for Ron Reese) for second. Diak still sits five points behind Rosinski for the lead in the class.

Chippewa Falls’ Michael Truscott dominated the Fire-Up Fireworks WISSOTA Street Stock Feature. Truscott got the lead from the outside pole and felt early pressure from George Dalbeck, but when Dalbeck got loose and nearly spun on lap eight, it was clear sailing for Truscott, who recorded his second straight win at Riverside.

John Kallas passed Dalbeck for second when Dalbeck slipped. With his nearest competitors – Fritz Scharf and Jordan Kurtti – taking the night off, Kallas opened up a 28-point cushion on his nearest competitor, Ken Valeria.

The Family Fours wound up being a match race between Rhinelander's Mike Kirkham and Eagle River’s Eric Scharf. Kirkham won the heat race when Scharf made a slip with three laps to go, but Scharf came back to win the feature, his fourth of the season.

FASTRAK Late Models were originally scheduled to run at Riverside Raceway on Tuesday, but a bleak forecast prompted track and sanctioning body officials to cancel on Monday as virtually all the drivers would have had to traveled at least two hours.

The two sides are reportedly working on a make up date. The FASTRAK Late Models have the third of their three originally scheduled appearances on Tuesday, July 31.

Racing continues next Tuesday at Riverside Raceway with Hot Laps at 7:30 and Racing at 8:00 PM.
