Three first time winners at The Hill!
By Dave Panske
May 29, 1999; Sturgeon Bay, WI. - A Saturday night for racing at the Hill produced three first time winners and one repeater on a full moons worth of action.
Aaron Thornton jumped into the lead at the start of the Modified feature followed by John Soukup, Gary Jacobs, Brad Anderegg, Buck Schmelzer and Darrell Massart. Anderegg moved into the runner up spot on lap 5 and after a restart on lap 7, kept the inside line and took over the lead. Once in front, Anderegg was able to run alone despite several more cautions for a multitude of spins and minor get togethers.
Thornton was holding second while the field sorted out behind, Schmelzer was challenging for the spot on lap 14, when the pair came together out of turn four, causing most of the field behind into a scramble, with several other cars involved. This moved Chris Derenne into second with Randie Back, George Henkel, Todd Dart and Jesse Bray behind. Derenne charged on the restart, but Anderegg pulled away again and won his first division feature here since July 22, 1995. Henkel edged out Back for the runner up spot at the finish with Dart also dropping Derenne back a spot to finish 5th just ahead of Jesse Bray in the top six. Anderegg's win was also carried a bit of luck. Checking the tires following the race, the right rear had the center of the tread out of the tire, almost all the way around. Brad said he noticed a vibration around the half way mark and rode on the threads the rest of the way.
The IMCA Stock Car main also carried several cautions with it, but Chadie Kroll started and finished in the front. Taking the lead at the start, Kroll started to pull away until Eric VanIten took over second on lap 4 and pulled right behind.
VanIten pressured the leader for the rest of the 20 lap race getting alongside a couple times, only to be dropped back into second. The race was the for third place with Matt Junio, Larry Karcz, Craig Paque, Kerry Douglas and John Heinz swapped positions several times. Douglas and Heinz were forced out late in the race with mechanical problems. Karcz was able to pass Junio on the final lap to take the third place finish. Jay Matthias came from the rear of the field to place fifth and Rob Gagne took the sixth place finish.
Jeff Vlies took command of the Street Stock main at the start and led through lap 8 with Gary Reinhardt, Shawn Olson, Josh Massart and James Tebon behind. Following a lap 9 restart, Olson pulled outside Reinhardt to the front. Reinhardt stayed with him however, and on lap 14, pulled inside, out of turn four. As the pair ran into turn two, the right rear wheel broke on Olsons car, ending his race and setting up a dash to the finish.
Rainhardt held off Tebon and Massart to win his first career feature event. Troy Rass, Bernie Reinhardt and Ken Hendricks rounded out the top six.
The bombers took the track for the night cap with Wayne Moore leading the opening three laps before Travis Annoye moved into the top spot and started to pull away. One caution slowed the race on lap 4 with Scott Reinhardt moving into the runner up spot on the restart.
Marty Beilke started making his run to the front taking third on lap 9 and second on lap 11. Beilke moved up on the leader but ran out of laps to seriously make a challenge for the lead. Reinhardt finished third with Scott Iverson fourth, Bill LeMieux fifth and Moore sixth. The win was the second of the season for Annoye as he became the first repeat feature winner in any division
Weekly Saturday night racing will continue throughout the summer featuring four divisions on the 1/3 mile clay oval, Gates open at 4:30 with racing at 6:00. The Thunderhill Speedway is located at the Door County Fairgrounds in Sturgeon Bay, WI about 35 miles north of Green Bay, WI just off Hwy. 57.
