Maurer tops the Mods,
Kroll takes second IMCA Stock win in a row at Thunderhill!
By Dave Panske

June 5, 1999; Sturgeon Bay, WI. - A beautiful day and night for racing action saw four very competitive feature races Saturday night at the Thunder Hill Speedway.

Tom Stark jumped into the lead at the start of the IMCA Modified main and led the opening circuit before Dean Maurer powered by and started to pull away from the field. Stark led the rest of the pack in pursuit followed by James Iverson, Buck Schmelzer, Darrel Massart, Brad Anderegg and Mike Plate.

A spin brought out a quick caution on lap 6 and closed the field on Maurer. Under green, Maurer took off again with R.M. Van Pay and Dan Ratajczak moving right behind Stark to fight for second. A stalled car on lap 11 bunched the field again, and Stark dropped off the pace after the restart with Van Pay and Ratajczak now fighting with Maurer for the lead. The battle was getting interesting until a series of cautions late in the race on laps 16, 17 and 18.

After the final one, Van Pay dropped on pit lane with a flat tire, as did Ratajczak, ending their bids for a feature win. Maurer had to contend with Chris Derenne for the final 2 laps and held on to win his first feature of the season here, with Derenne in the runner up spot. Point leader, Todd Dart, had to make his way from the rear of the field to place third with Anderegg taking fourth, Schmelzer fifth and John Soukup rounding out the top six.

Charlie Kroll (#9) had been the man to beat the past two weeks in IMCA Stock car action.  Tonight he scored his second straight feature win. 6599b.jpg (16120 bytes)

Charlie Kroll took over the lead in the IMCA Stock Car feature on the second lap from Jon Mathu and following a lap 3 caution, was never threatened as he pulled away from the battle for his second straight division feature win. Pat Davister moved into second on lap 5, and chased Kroll but could not close enough to mount a serious challenge. The race was for third with Todd Smith, Rod Snellenberger, Larry Karcz, Jr., John Heinz and Sean Jerovetz. The group ran tight the entire race and when the checkered fell, Snellenberger was in third place with Karcz, Heinz and Smith making up the top six.

6599c.jpg (15473 bytes) Wally Lhost (#98) earned his first career feature win in the Street Stock division at Thunderhill this evening.

Scott Iverson made the move up to the Street Stock division this year and took the lead in the feature from the front row. Jared Siefert, Rick Johnson, Tom Daubner, Jason Brungraber and Ken Hendricks lined up behind. After a lap 8 caution erased his lead, Iverson had to contend with Johnson again, but Troy Muench had moved up and took second after the restart. For the rest of the race, Muench pressured the leader, but Iverson took his first career division feature win just ahead of Muench at the line. Troy Rass ran to third, his best finish of the Season, with Bernie Reinhardt in fourth, Josh Massart in fifth and Dan Anschutz in sixth.

James Anderson set the pace for the opening two laps of the Bomber feature with Corey Haen taking over the lead after a restart on lap 3. Haen pulled away for a few laps before Wally Lhost and Wayne Moore moved into second and third and quickly closed the gap on the leader. Lhost moved outside into the lead on lap 9 and started to open a lead when a final caution bunched the pack on lap 13, setting up a 2 tap dash.

Lhost held the lead with Haan second to the finish. Jay Naze challenged but settled for the third place finish with Moore taking fourth. Scott Reinhardt and Brent Eisenman rounded out the top six.

The win was the first career feature win for Lhost in his second year in the division.
