5 divisions compete at "The
Hill", Van Pay tops Mod action!
By Dave Panske
June 19, 1999; Sturgeon Bay, WI. - Another nice Saturday night and a great crowd to watch the racing action at the Hill.
Dean Maurer started the IMCA Modified feature taking the lead from the second row while brother, Doug Maurer, R.M Van Pay and Chris Christensen raced for the runner up spot. Van Pay took over second on lap 3 and hooked up on the inside line to chase down the leader. Maurer was running strong on the high side, but Van Pay found the fast way to take the top spot away on lap 7.

99th Career Modified feature win!! R.M. Van Pay (#00) is the area's most prolific feature winner in Modified action. He has won a total of 99 feature wins in his career with tonight's victory at The Hill. |
The caution appeared for the first time for a spin in turn four on the next tour and again on lap 10 for another spin. After that, it was green the rest of the way. Van Pay pulled away to the finish, the checkered being his 99th victory in the modified division. The race was between the Maurer boys over the last half of the race as they ran side by side most of the way. Doug bested Dean over the final couple laps to chase Van Pay to the finish line. Dean took third with Christensen running to a strong fourth place finish. Brad Anderegg and George Henkel rounded out the top six. Henkel's finish moved him atop the latest point standings.
Rookie contender, Kerry Douglas set the pace early in the IMCA Stock Car feature followed by Jason Geyer, Gary Bouche, John Heinz and Matt Junio.
| Rookie racer Brett Wenzel (#34) celebrated his 16th birthday by winning his first race in the IMCA Stock car division, taking the checkered flag in the consolation race. | ![]() |
Heinz moved to the front, taking the runner up spot on lap 7, and worked into the lead on lap 10. Once in front, Heinz pulled away, leaving the battle for second. Douglas, Geyer, Pat Davister, Jay Matthias, Junio and Rob Gagne ran together for position until the first caution appeared on lap 17 for a front chute spin. The bunched field could not stay with Heinz on the restart, leaving him to collect the feature win and become the first repeat winner in he division this season.
The shuffle was on behind with Davister getting the inside line to take second Douglas held on to take third over Geyer with Matthias and Junio rounding out the top six.
Jared Siefert took the Street Stock lead at the start, and quickly pulled away from the field leaving Shannon Smith, Jason Brungraber and Troy Rass to race for second. Siefert ran away during the entire race while the rest of the pack stayed tight. The field was bunched by the lone caution on lap 13, but the bad luck that has plagued Siefed here this season, stayed away as he rolled to his first feature win of the season. Brungraber completed his best run of the season finishing second, Phil Faustini nipped Rass at the line for third with Shawn Olson edging Josh Massart for fifth.
Ed Anschutz topped the Bomber field for the opening lap before the car erupted in a cloud a smoke on lap 2, forcing him to the pit on a lap 3 caution. Travis Annoye was the new leader with Jay Naze, Marly Beilke, Corey Haan and Scott Iverson behind. Annoye hooked up on the outside lane and Naze used the inside route to pull even on lap 6.

Jay Naze (#46) earned his first Bomber feature win of the season on Thunderhill's third-mile clay oval. Naze is the defending champion in the division. |
On the next tap, the right rear tire broke on Annoye's car entering turn three. His car rolled over onto the roof, on the top of the track. He was not injured and when the race resumed, Naze pulled away for his first feature win of the year. Scott Reinhardt and Belike hooked up in a side by side battle for the runner up spot for the rest of the race with Belike edging Reinhardt out of the final turn to place second. Mike Soukup came from the rear of the field to place fourth with Wally Lhost taking fifth and Bill LeMieux sixth.
The Sport Trucks made a special appearance tonight and an old face turned up in victory lane for both the heat and feature win. Former Stock Car track champion, John Gregorich, drove his nephews truck to the double victories. First time driver, Mike Tebon ran to a strong second place finish with Ben Kroll third end Shawn Dorn fourth
