Van Iten best in IMCA Stock at "The Hill"!
By Dave Panske

June 26, 1999; Sturgeon Bay, WI. - The hot, humid weather helps turn the tracks black and slick, and the feature action is closer than ever at the Hill On Saturday nights.

Buck Schmelzer led the opening 3 laps of the IMCA Modified feature before Doug Maurer hooked on the outside and took control Schmelzer ran alongside for 6 laps before Maurer ran in front alone, leaving a log jam behind for the runner up spot, Brad Anderegg, George Henkel, Dan Ratajczak, Mike Plate and Dean Maurer doubled and sometimes tripled up behind. A lone caution for a spin on lap 12 bunched the pack with Maurer still leading the way. He was able to pull away again on the restart thanks to the side by side action behind now joined by Randie Back and Chris Derenne. Maurer took his second feature flag of the season followed by Henkel, Back and Schmelzer. Ratajczak and Derenne rounded out the top six.

Rookie, Kerry Douglas led the way at the start of the IMCA Stock Car main followed by Dave Bouche, Jeff Brehmer, Eric VanIten,Gary Bouche and Matt Junio. A first caution on lap 6 doubled up the field for the restart and VanIten hooked up on the outside and took the lead from Douglas.

One lap later. A pair of cautions on lap 9 kept things close, but once the green appeared again, VanIten took off and ran alone to his second feature win of the year Douglas and Gary Bouche ran door to door for the remainder of the race keeping the rest of the field doubled up behind them. Rod Snellenberger tried three wide moves a couple of times, but no traction outside prevented success Douglas nipped Bouche at the line for the runner up spot, but was disqualified for refusing a claim after the race. Bouche finished third with Matt Junio, Tim Van De Hei and Dave Bouche rounding out the top six.

62699a.jpg (15885 bytes) Shawn Olson (#2) started the Street Stock feature in the third row but wasted little time in taking the lead.  Olson would run ahead of his competitors to earn his first feature win of the 1999 season at Thunder Hill.

The street stock feature started with a three car get together in turn two on the start. Once green was out, Shawn Olson took the outside from row three and pulled into the top spot right away. One caution on lap 3 bunched the pack, but the track stayed open the rest of the way, and Olson drove away for his first feature win of the year. The battle was for the runner up spot. Kevin Jandrin, Bernie Reinhardt, James Tebon, Phil Faustini, Gregg Siebold and Darren Otto ran tight behind. Reinhardt took second on lap 8 and chased Olson to finish second and hold his point lead. Faustini and Tebon made the top four at the finish with Siebold and Offo rounding out the top 6 finishers.

Wayne Moore (#55) was another driver to earn his first feature checkered this season.  Moore came home first in the Bomber main event.

Several cautions slowed the Bomber main with Chad Szprejda leading until Wayne Moore pulled into the lead on lap 4. Moore had the field close because of the cautions, and on the final restart on lap 9, Don Aregoni, Jr., Jay Naze, Szprejda, Bill LeMieux end Mike Soukup were behind Naze moved into second on lap 12 and closed on the leader. On the final lap, Naze set up and made the pass for the lead in turn 2, Moore was ready for a return move entering turn three and was able to pull off the move to take his first feature win of the season with Naze right behind in second. Soukup, Aregoni, Szprejda and Jeremy Wiltala rounded out the top six.
