Two in a row for Uttech at Chilton in WIMSA action!
By Bill Brenner

August 13, 1999, Chilton, WI -  Receiving a special driver introduction by announcer Eric Mueller, were the WIMSA Mini-Sprint drivers. The twenty-lap feature was a fast and furious race with many lead changes and thrills and spills.

Two in a row!  Scott Uttech (#1) is the defending WIMSA Mini-Sprint Series champion and in the final weeks he looks to be closing in on point leader Scott Sippel here at the Calumet County Fairgrounds.  Uttech scored his second straight WIMSA Mini-Sprint feature on the tight quarter-mile clay oval.

Dave Lisowe sat on the pole of this feature, accompanying him were Jeff Schmidt, Mike Kertscher and Joe Pantley  Only one lap into the race, there was a three-car tangle involving the cars of Micheal Emme, Tim Frerichs, and Craig Gravatt. Once back underway, Kertscher dove inside in turn one to pass the cars of Lisowe and Schmidt. Building up a commanding lead over the pack, Kertscher clearly had one of the fastest cars on the track. Another guy to watch was current point leader Scotty Sippel. Sippel moved into the third spot just behind Lisowe.

Wheel to wheel for awhile!  Tim Frerichs (#7) and Craig Gravatt (#32) run wing to win, but the two would soon be involved in a tangle that also included Mike Emme.

Fast Qualifier Scott Uttech, Pantley and Kevin Eggert diced things up for the fourth spot going three wide in several corners. Even dicier was another tangle between Dan Owing's ride and Eggert. Dan hit the retaining barrier hard, flipped and landed the car on its side. After flipping the machine back over, he climbed out waving to the crowd that he was OK. That just goes to show how strong these cars are built!

The next restart provided Kertscher as the leader, then Lisowe and Sippel next in line. Sippel charging hard for the lead spot ran bumper to bumper with Kertscher until finally Kertschers ride stalled on the back stretch,  handing the top spot to Sippel.  On the restart, Sippel's biggest competition was directly behind him, the track record holder car of Scott Uttech.  Sippel used as much motor as he could to pull a big holeshot over Uttech, but it proved insufficient as Uttech made the pass on the white flag lap to win the feature. Sippel settled for second, still retaining the point lead, then brother of the race winner, Dan Uttech, then Jeff Harder and Dave Lisowe.
